The French Open

Thought we might as well start a thread as the tournament begins today.

Here's the draw for both sides:

Marino took out Bondarenko (Kateryna) in straight sets, one Canadian through to the 2nd round!

My guy Gulbis is knocked out ignominiously in the first round 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Hard to believe that in February he was ranked 21 in the world and that he has fallen all the way to 85 in three months. In fact his opponent in this match, Kavcic, someone whom I have never heard of, is actually ranked ahead of him at 79. But when you win only 29% of your second serves, have 55 unforced errors and 9 double faults, you're not winning too many tennis matches.

Cilic is out already, as well, losing in straight sets to 99th ranked Ramirez-Hidalgo of Spain.

Hard to believe he's still your guy. But you're right though... how could anyone NOT root for him? Ernests Gulbis: 'I enjoy going out. You can't think only about tennis'

No predictions from me.... but GOOOO Novak! Here's hoping he completes his ascension to the throne.

Cilic out already.

No predictions, just hoping Novak wins it.

Hard to bet against Novak at this point, should be interesting. I think Ferrer is definitely a good darkhorse pick, he has played very well this year.

Let's just say that I got a lot of sympathy for that attitude.

Doesn't Gulbis come from an extremely wealthy family, too? That could have something to do with his wavering motivation.

I don't think it's motivation so much as psychological pressure increasing with each poor outing. Ernests stroking looked really tense, and when your head lands in one of these fixes in tennis, it can really spiral out of control and become devilishly hard to correct. New coach, maybe.

Yup, and he's not an overly popular athlete in Latvia for that reason I think, seen as a bit of a rich playboy with an arrogance to him.

Hopefully for Gulbis he takes a few years and applies himself. I sympathize with wanting to have that balance in your life, but you can also regret it later on if you realize you didn't give it your best shot. Tennis is a particularly demanding sport if you're committing to it 100%.

Wow. How did Berdych manage to do that, I wonder? Robert, ranked 140, is basically a 31 year old club player with a lifetime 4-11 record on clay.

With his skillful backhand slashing Stepanek to ribbons, Gasquet pulls off a nice straight set win. For his part, Stepanek, scurrying cumbersomely about the court like the large, relatively unresponsive mole that he is, expended the usual effort only to reap the usual reward: inelegant defeat.

Easy first set win at love for Wozniacki. The only point worth noting is that Date-Krumm's bright pink top/lime green skirt outfit makes her look from a distance rather like a watermelon slice running around a tennis court.

I hate to be the Berrer of bad news, but Raonic has dropped the first set.

Wozinak through easily.

Dancevic out in 4.

Raonic down a set and a break. Not looking for him.

Edit: Second set to Milos!

Pretty bad result for Raonic. Really thought this was a match he would have won.

Isner takes a second set tie breaker, meaning Nadal will have to expend more energy than he would have wanted to win a first round match.

Interesting. It's extremely unlikely Isner would be able to upset him but wouldn't that be something.

Murray and Sharapova through easily and no upsets yet on either side today.

Ya I'm rooting for Isner aswell. Would be unbelievable to see him win. Of course, there is a lot of tennis left to be played though.

They mention on the feed that Nadal has NEVER lost in the first round at a major, so it would be unprecedented. Not to mention at Roland Garros...
