High School Hockey blossoms in Newark............yes Newark

http://blog.nj.com/njv_barry_carter/...ool_hocke.html

Quote:
They’d linger around the locker room at Newark’s Ironbound ice rink, dressing slowly, waiting for coach Keith Veltre to leave.

Two hours of practice with their coach just wasn’t enough for Daniel Martinez, 17, and Anthony Ortero, 18, team members on the East Side High School Raiders.

As soon as Veltre was out of sight, his defenseman and forward would throw their gear back on and hit the ice — not realizing the coach could hear them firing shots on goal.

"We’re like rink rats,’’ Martinez said. "We can never get enough.’’
And the Devils coming to Newark is a big reason for it:

Quote:
The Devils changed all of that. There’s a buzz after four years, and interest has taken hold. The program started out with fewer than 10 kids, then jumped to 30 in its second year. Now Veltre expects 300 to be slapping shots in the fall in the newly renovated rink. And he says every zip code should be represented, so no one can say it’s only kids from one area of the city.

its nice to see 'newark' and 'firing shots' in the same article without hearing about a victim. very cool

We were supposed to play East Side my senior year but they cancelled our games because some kids on their team got in a huge fight with each other or something .

Glad to see their program is doing well. I might be wrong, but I think they made states this past year.

And to think East Side was making pee-wee players look like NHL All-Stars not too long ago.

I have a feeling youth hockey is on the rise in NJ in general.

It's been on the rise for years now. When I was a kid, you realistically didnt have an opportunity to play ice hockey in New Jersey unless you lived near the city or were lucky enough to live near one of the random non-urban rinks. Hell, even when I was in high school we used to rent ice in Allentown, PA in the middle of the night just to fool around. Now there are sheets of ice up just about everywhere in Jersey.

I started playing in 1998 and that's when hockey in North Jersey started becoming bigger and bigger

Floyd Hall opened up in 1998, the Ice House opened up in 1999, the Ice Vault opened around 2004

I have old programs from Devils games laying around and looking at the difference over the span of a few years, it's pretty amazing seeing how many more rinks opened up in the late '90's early '00's

My former school and rink. Last I heard that rink had been condemned and the program had been shelved. Glad to see they are back.

this is great news.

I believe 2001 or 2002 was either the first year, or one of the first years that there was hockey for the east side HS since I played against them when I was on my HS hockey team at Governor Livingston HS.

I remember them specifically because our program was only a couple years old (it was started by my Dad my Freshman year) and their's was very new as well so there was a nice rivalry there.

Since then to today, my HS hockey team went from being fully funded by the parents to being fully funded by the School Board, including equipment (gloves, helmets, shells, bags). It is really good to see that East Side has gone in the same direction as my HS.
