Up until this season, I was all about it. I have to be honest. But now? For a guy like Gomez to only get 38 points? On a decent team?

He had a good playoff run last year, and wasn't horrible in his 7 games this year. We always know that Scott Gomez gears it up, a bit, for playoff time. But he took a lot of dumb penalties this regular season.

I'm sure he bounces back, and scores more. But I'm losing interest on him. I had so much faith that right now would be his prime years. That his greatest assets (passing and vision) would have finally matured at this age. But 38 points? Screw that noise.

If he's so good why would Montreal get rid of him?

He's not coming back under Lou after he trash talked the team after he left. He's a smug little ***** and if people thought Arnott was garbage I'd love to see the remarks about Gomez refusing to shoot from the slot wide open.

I'd take him back at that price. The guy is clutch during the playoffs and would fit real well with Kovalchuk, who's a shoot first winger while Gomez is a past first center.

The only problem is that we'd have to move someone on offense (Clarkson, Zubrus or Rolston).

youre the #1 proponent of "Lou has to trade for or sign a PMD" and you want to give nearly $4 million (for 3 more years) to this hack?

come on man. the money can be spent much better elsewhere

The contract is awful, he'd be blocking Josefson, and we don't need more forwards, we need defencemen. All good reasons to pass.

This. If we manage to deal Rolston, Clarkson, or Zubrus, then why the hell are we going to go after a 40 point player for 4 mil? Why not put that money towards Pitkanen, Ehrhoff, or someone else?

If we cleared a bad contract, we shouldn't take on another one.

I understand the negative reaction. At this point, I think that things have switched and the people arguing on emotion are those who want / would take him back. Still, I'd take him back - with the caveat that I'd need Lou to believe Gomez still wants to play.

A motivated Gomez brings something to the Devils that they don't have: someone who can skate the puck up ice and bust the trap. Tedenby is the closest we have to that now, but Teddy doesn't really have the vision that Gomez had / has.

You'd immediately have pretty awesome center depth:

1C: Zajac
2C: Gomez
3C: Elias
4C: Josefson (sp?)

The other positive on the Gomez contract is that is is < 35, so you can put him in the minors if he really can't play. I think the salary hit may be too high for VBK (we're not the Rangers with unlimited money), but if it came to it, Gomez wouldn't screw the team in the same way Rolston, Malakov or Mogilny. Gomer doesn't have a NMC, and his NTC is limited (can specify 3 teams he won't go to).

I've never liked Gomez, so there's no emotion here for me. I don't want him in a Devils jersey again.

He has a NMC, so you can't put him in Albany. Also, Gomez would end up being the 4th liner on this team. Putting Josefson on 4th line for the next two years would hinder his development. Gomez is not worth the mess he causes.

I would think about it, but say no because of cap. Adding Gomez at 3.7 is like addidng Arnott last year. Just prevents you from addressing a bigger need.

BTW, Gomez does not have a NMC. He has a limited no trade. Something like 5 teams he can say no to. He can be buried in the minors, as might happen in Montreal. He probably won't end up on reentry because the Habs are a team that can afford to let him rot in Hamilton.

We need to stop going back to the past. We have plenty of forwards and if we draft Courts, the Devils are in great shape up the middle. Plus, out of every players who left via UFA, I dislike him the most and he sucks, just ask a Montreal fan.

its actually way worse, since Arnott was only for 1 year. this would be for 3 more years.

I'm not even sure he's worth $3.7M at this point. His career is falling pretty fast. Not to mention, he's kindof a dbag.

I agree the Habs probably wouldn't put him on re-entry. More likely they just ride out the contract or try to trade him when there are fewer years on it.

This. I wouldn't take him if they paid us $3.7 to roster him.

We need hard nosed, passionate, fire in the belly types who bring their A game and come to play.

The exact opposite of Gomez.

Hopefully Winnipeg closes and they ship his sorry butt out there to wither away in the woods somewhere.

This. We need hungry players who are on the up, players who are reaching their peak, players that have the ability to develop further. IMO Gomez is not a player we need.
