I agree with you, but i think that hes missing a couple of defenseman. But i think it still puts him in the top 9-13 range.

Lidstrom
Chara
Doughty
Pronger
Weber
Keith
Yandle
Suter
Rafalski
Staal
Letang
Kronwall
Boyle
Seabrook
Bieska

Maybe from the 3 guys standing in front of Lundqvist on a constant basis?

Funny, considering Luongo was abused all Chicago series by big guys like Bolland.

But nooo, we're the only ones who let people anywhere near our goalie! Marc's a teddy bear, what was I thinking?

First and foremost, I would want it to be our 2011 for their 2012.

All I'm saying is 99 out of 100 Rangers fans overate Staal. C'mon now people are asking for Backes and Stewart here.

Maybe straight up, nevermind both of them.

I'd do Staal for Backes straight up and if I were the Blues I wouldn't even do Stewart for Staal straight up.

Agreed. You could argue Staal over Suter too. That's very close

People underrate Staal grossly, too.

He's one of the most positionally sound d-men in the NHL. His game isn't the big hit.

At first I didn't really think Staal was a Top-20 D-man, but going through a list I could only come up with maybe 15 that are I think are definitely better than him. Then there are others like Letang, Byfuglien, Seabrook, JJ etc who could be debated.

1. Vishnovsky
2. Enstrom
3. Chara
4. Keith
5. Lidstrom
6. Doughty
7. Weber
8. Suter
9. Streit
10. Pronger
11. Timonen
12. Yandle
13. Boyle
14. Ehrhoff
15. Edler

No it's not. Staal has a better offensive upside but defensively Suter is better than Weber, nevermind Staal.

No and it doesn't have to be his whole game, but he has to throw his weight around more than he does. He's wasting alot of size and strength. If Staal were just a little more physical and a little more involved in the offense he'd be near the top. He has the ability too. I just think Staal needs to take more risks. Step up for the big hit and go for the net more often. He could easily register 10-12 goals and rattle alot more bones. That would put him up where some people here are saying he is.

Thanks for help!
Like Everyone else has stated... More than he is worth. The Rangers are looking up and he's an intergral part of their 'rebuild.' We would need a solid blue-liner, a bonafide top 6 and prob a couple picks.

There's 13 defensemen right there that overall are better than Marc Staal, and I probably missed a couple.
Staal is easily better then Kronwall, Bieksa and Seabrook. Probably Letang as well, the guy is soooo overrated. Bieksa is having a good playoff run lol, nothing more. Put Staal with a team that actually plays a system (i think that's what the term's called right? "Sacrifice your body" isn't a system) and his offense numbers would improve drastically. Pair him with Duncan Keith, like Seabrook has the privilege of, and they would form the best D pair in the NHL.

Not to mention the only player younger then Staal (Letang and Yandle might be a few months, but I'm too lazy to check, I know they're all 2005) on this list is Doughty. When Lidstrom, Boyle, Pronger and Chara start losing a step Staal will solidify himself even further into that top 10.

On a serious note though, the Rangers aren't moving Staal. Period. And if they did it would have to start with Stewart and Backes, with a pick. Overpayment, sure, but you have to overpay to get a top 10 defenseman.
And Hamonic, he's at least 4 times better then Staal.

That's mostly because Staal is untradeable right now. He's one of the most experienced Rangers defenseman with a very manageable contract for the next 4 seasons. It would take massive overpayment to get him because the Rangers defense looks very bad without him.

Considering EJ and a 1st got St Louis Stewart and Shattenkirk, Staal could fetch more then just one of those guys straight up.

No you couldn't, but that still doesn't do the list any good.

Bieksa? For real? Guy is a 2nd pairing defenseman at best.

Staal isn't top 10, but he's worth more than Backes straight up. The guy can barely put up 60 points, and we wanna trade our #1 defenseman for him? Hell no.

(And Letang is better)

staal put up the same amount of points as letang after crosby got injured. staal is better defensively. put crosby and malkin on the rangers and i bet staal increases his point totals just a bit.

Staal's the second most valuable player in this organization. He's not going anywhere unless Sather starts hanging out with teenagers like machinehead.

Bieksa better than Staal? Statements like this really show how little some people know about anything hockey-related. It's straight up embarassing.

You realize the best forward Letang was playing with at that point was Jordan Staal, correct? Of course his production is going to fall, he was playing with scrubs.

why are people comparing Staal to Letang? Two completely different types of players.
