*OFFICIAL* Guelph Storm 2011-12 Season Thread

Since no one has started it I feel I should take the reigns.

I'll start with a quick overview of what's the deal with the potential roster changes.

Gone:

Peter Holland, Taylor Beck, Richard Panik, Michael Latta, Chris Van Laren, Sam Lofquist, Tyler Carroll

Potential Overagers

Daniel Erlich, Riley Sonnenburg, Stephan Gaskin, Kyle Pereria, Tim Campbell, Brandon Foote

Newcomers

Patrick Watling, Justin Auger, Ryan Horvat, Mac Nichol, Hunter Garlent, Jason Dickinson, Zach Leslie (Read somewhere that Mike Kelly is high on him and trying to get him signed), Michael Levesque (he's the grit we need, 271 pims last season!)

Here is what I believe the lineup might look like:

Offence:

Scott Kosmachuk - Francis Menard - Cody McNaughton

Brock McGinn - Patrick Watling - Zack Mitchell

Ryan Horvat - Hunter Garlent - Justin Auger

Michael Levesque - Jason Dickinson - Ben Harpur

Defence:

Stephen Gaskin - Kyle Periera

Andrey Pedan - Matt Finn

Mac Nichol - Zach Leslie

Goalie

Garret Sparks

Wide Open

Breakdown by Birth Year

91: Gaskin, Periera

92: McNaughton, Menard

93: Watling, Mitchell, Nichol, Pedan, Horvat, Sparks

94: Kosmachuk, McGinn, Auger, Finn, Leslie

95: Garlent, Dickinson, Levesque, Harpur

I feel like our team this year is going to strugle, but will have a ton of potential and could be a very good group in a few years.

Nice overview, do you feel Harpur will be best suited up front? Guelph drafted him as a defenceman and he played his entire MM year on the backend. However prior to minor midget he was always forward. I like him more on the blueline.

Dickinson and Garlent I feel could both move up and get more icetime, Dickinson plays on the LW as well as center. Look to see these guys on the PP too

I think many are expected Elrich to be in Europe next season.

I don't know how they will use Harpur. The blueline seems okay for this upcoming season so I think he would earn more playing time up front. Him and Levesque would be one dangerous line. I like having the luxury of a guy that can play both where as we can kind of slide him in wherever needed.

I certainly agree with Dickinson and Garlent getting more ice time as the season progresses. My line-up would be more of an opening night line-up, both Dickinson and Garlent will likely be eased into the line-up while learning the ins and outs of the OHL.

Being around the rink and talking to Erlich, he is defiantly one of the nicer guys I have ever come across, and I wish we could see him return.

But unfortunately, he has indeed signed with EC Salzburg of the Austrian League. There website already has him listed on the roster. EC Salzburg is the best team in the Austrian League winning the championship 4 out of the last 5 years (the other year they went to the finals). I want to say congrats to Daniel and wish him all the best!

But again, if he were to come back (ala Mat Sisca) i'm sure Guelph would find a spot for him to provide some leadership to this young group.

I had the chance to attend the end of the year banquet for the Storm, very well done by all involved.

Congrats to Michael Latta and Tyler Carroll on being named co-mvps of the Guelph Storm.

Both players were real heart and soul guys who will be missed next season and beyond, I personally wish both all the best in the future!

(still get a chill when I see Tyler Carroll blocking those shots)

Yea the play.

It really speaks volumes about it when even the Kitchener fans are applauding Carroll's effort.

Anyone see either Mitchell or McNaughton having a breakout year offensively?

I watched the NY Islanders prospect game (which McNaughton was an invitee to) and he looked very good. His line was probably the best line throughout the whole game.

If he can take something like that and build on it, Cody could very well have a good year.

How do you watch an Islanders prospects game in July?

I would agree McNaughton may be due for a good year offensively especially if he plays like he did in the playoffs.

I was reading the Islanders board here and someone posted there development camp scrimmage link. I watched it because I was interested in seeing both Pedan and McNaughton play.

I loved Cody's play in the playoffs, when he plays with that edge he can be a very effective player. Mitchell also had a strong playoffs, although that might be a lot of credit to his linemates (he was playing with some of the top guys). We will see if that carries over.

Based on talent alone the answer should be Mitchell. The kid has great hands and good vision but for whatever reason can't seem to translate that into scoring goals at this level. Zack was a big disappointment for me last season, I really thought he'd step up and get around 20 goals.

Cody is a hard working kid who isn't afraid to get his nose dirty and chips in the occasional goal. Given how young we are this season I'd expect Cody to have a few more fights because he'll be sticking up for the kids.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Kosmachuk outscore both of them this season. I really think he's going to have a good season.

I wonder if Mitchell regrets giving up a hockey scholarship to Harvard.

I think Kos is gonna be a very good player for this team, as is McGinn. Also pretty excited about the new import pick, Richard.

Elite Prospects is confirming Tanner Richard will be playing in Guleph this year. Sourced as "Inside Information".

Never doubted he would be here.

He spends his summers in Ontario, and said in an interview that his dream was to play in the NHL and how he thought the OHL was best for him. He also turned down a pretty nice contract from his team in Switzerland.

We have a "Hunter" and a "Tanner" in our lineup. Opposing teams with animals as nicknames better watch out.

Free agents Keegan Ackerland and Goalie Furlong could fill some spots too

A couple of questions.

1. Any news if all of the top draft picks have signed?

2. Where is the depth on defense going to come? I see Finn, Pedan, a couple of overagers, and Harpur as sure bets to be on defense. After that, I am not sure.

3. Is the goal scoring going to be dependent on the coming to age of McGinn, Richard, Kosmychuk, and McNaughton? If not, Guelph will have trouble putting the puck in the net.

4. If Foote is traded or cut, who is the backup?

One month to go until the start of the season.

1. I haven't heard of any picks signed, but it seems Guelph is always late in that regard. Remember all three picks that played from last year didnt sign till late on in the season.

2. I am assuming Mac Nichol will earn a full time role this year. He wasen't horrible when he got into games last season, but he could only play a certian amount thanks to the Jr B call up rule. Also 2010 pick Zach Leslie could easily make the lineup if he gets signed (Which Mike Kelly wants)

3. Unfortunatley, I think we are gonna have to rely on the hope that big years come from the youngsters. And I feel like not to many "pretty" goals will be scored this year. It could be a long season in that regard.

4. Recent 2011 draft pick Jason Da Silva was a goalie for team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games. If/When Foote is gone he should be able to step in as a backup.
