A prospect is allowed to play 9 NHL games, if they play 10 a year is burn on there contract.
D'Amigo (under 20) on other hand came from the NCAA played 40+ AHL games then was sent to the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. A year on his deal was not burned either
In any North American league whether it will be the NCAA, OHL, WHL, QMJHL a player can play a maximum of 4 years in that league. If for example a player signs an ELC contract with 3 years into their junior career the NHL team has an option of keeping them in the NHL or sending them back as an over-ager. Kadri for example almost made the Leafs in 09-10, say he played 15 games Toronto could potentially send him back to the OHL but it would burn a year on his contract.
Hopefully this isn't too confusing theres a ton of loop-holes for european players too
