Those actually look pretty nice. When the new main logo is on a smaller surface (on a hat not a jersey), it's more appealing.

Not sure where to put this and probably not big enough news for it's own thread.

Quote:
Rob Kitamura, widely recognized as one of the best young scouts with an eye for talent, will be leaving his post with the Ontario Hockey League.

According to sources, Kitamura, who has been the OHL's director of central scouting and player development, will join the scouting staff of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.
Can't argue with his success.

Murray has seen the NHL Draft change over the last two decades. You can’t hold on to Europeans forever now and rules changes have opened up the game for different types of players.

What hasn’t changed is that direction from the top is just as important. Murray said that there is no doubt what type of player Yzerman wants to bring into the organization. That makes it much easier for the scouting staff.

“You’re looking for people with good character qualities,” said Murray, who coached Regina University from 1985-88. “You want people with intelligence and competitiveness.

“Size is not as big a factor as it used to be. The bigger, stronger player that didn’t have speed and quickness is not as effective as he used to be.”
Quote:
Even though there might be some areas of need in the Lightning’s system, Murray said you cannot think that way when you are about to make a pick.

“If you take the best player and they all turn out good, then whatever you have a surplus of you can use to trade for whatever your need might be,” Murray said. “You’re picking the guy that you hope develops into the best player. Everything in hockey is about projection.”

You are searching for talent, but you are also trying to judge what’s in a player’s head.

“It’s our job to take the best character guys and the kids with the strongest wills,” Plandowski said. “You want to pick the guys that will do the work to get better.”

And no one's getting dropped? Not that anyone would probably find out until after the draft. Seems like odd timing just to be hiring scouts.

Of course, SFY may want the additional input, so they're hired now, instead of later. (I'm assuming they're amateur scouts, confirm/deny?) That does also basically imply that none of the hirelings are coming from other NHL teams, since the amateur scouting industrial complex revolves around the draft.

Mercyhurst's Rosso Accepts Scouting Position With NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.

John Rosso, assistant coach for the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team, has resigned to become a United States Amateur Scout with the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning.

Rosso, who spent one season with head coach Rick Gotkin, will primarily cover Minnesota high school hockey, the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) for Tampa Bay.

It sounds like #tblightning may be adding 3 additional scouts to the staff besides the two already known for 5 total.

“You always want more picks, but we’re pretty comfortable that we’re going to get two good prospects,” Lightning Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray said. “We think the strength of this draft is in the top two rounds. After that, you hope for a late-bloomer or a guy you like who falls into your hands in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.”
Quote:
Plandowski said after the first 10 picks or so, the draft often “goes bananas.”

“It will happen again this year,” he said.

One team’s treasure is projected much lower on another team’s board. Murray said that is why only a few mock drafts and ratings have a real pulse on what the order might be, but even the more thorough ratings “are all over the map this year.”

That could end up making a lot of teams happy.

“It’s certainly more difficult to try and identify guys who are going to be NHL players later in the draft,” Murray said. “But after a top 10 that are very strong this year, I think every team in the first round might get the 11th best player on their list, because there’s a large group of players behind the top group that all have various strengths and weaknesses.”

It is not necessarily in his plan, and the circumstances would have to be right, but Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said he is open to trading up from his No. 27 draft position.

"Oh, definitely," Yzerman said Friday. "You explore opportunities all the way up to almost until you're picking. Some of those things are really a call at the draft table."
Quote:
Yzerman said he likely would not target one player.

"Because by the time you move up he may be gone if you don't move up a bunch of spots," he said. "So, it's got to be almost a group of players. 'We like this group of players. We might have a chance to get one.'"

Of course, Yzerman wouldn't mind staying at 27, either.

"To trade up just to trade up doesn't make sense," he said. "They're just 18-year-old kids. It's all speculative. But if it's someone we really like and we think we have a chance, we'll move up."

So Vladislav Namestnikov is the nephew of Yzerman teammate Slava Kozlov, and has been compared to Igor Larionov. Hmmm...

Chris Snell is leaving the team. He was in charge of scouting Ontario.

Just what I was in here to post. IIRC, Snell was the seemingly random guy bald guy who went up on stage for the Connolly pick.
