Can't really vote - I want an option between $2.5 - $3.
It'll be a tough call for White, I think. He probably would like to settle in a city but would want a raise. He's making $3m now (-$5) but I don't think DW should go higher than $3m. Ok, maybe $3.25 but that's tops.
He's a Demers with more experience. I like his mobility at the point, but he's not a very smart offensive D-man, but he does have a decent shot. Ehh, maybe for under 2.5. Maybe. That said, he's a Demers with more experience.
I'd re-sign him for under 2.5m for sure, but it really depends on who else is available. If for instance DW feels he is not going to be able to bring in a top-2 d-man then he may not have a choice.
Just for for-instancing fun say the Sharks traded Heatley + Vlasic to Minny for Burns (just a random trade I came up with, don't nitpick) you end with something like:
Burns - Demers
Boyle - Murray
White - Braun
If instead it was Heatley + Murray, then keeping White becomes kind of problematic because you end up with a very soft pairing somewhere.
So basically, it depends on what DW thinks he can do outside of re-signing White. If he plans to keep Heatley for instance I suspect he will try to re-sign White and simply look to fill out the D and hope for growth.
That's what we're looking at, and I don't know of any other prospects that are NHL ready right now. I think that DW will make a push at it before July 1 just because he doesn't want to find himself on July 15th with the above lineup and having to make a trade or having essentially 3 rookies out of 7. That's why he signed Niitty last year right away before the market even set itself, IMO. Didn't want the idea of Greiss as the #1 still in August.
Ideally, I'd like a guy to take Murray's slot and slide him down with Braun, but who knows if we can find a guy that can do that.
With Ian White (23 Games) the Sharks went from a 3.10 GAA to a 2.43 GAA and a .542 Win Percentage to a .695 Win Percentage. We already know he's a good fit with the team and that DW had is eye on him for a while. If he signs for 3.5 or less I think you make the deal unless we can find a better replacement. I realize those numbers can't be solely attributed to White, but it is a dramatic change.
I don't know how hard DW tries to go after someone else with his boy already in teal. Won't be surprised either way.

Boyle, Braun, Demers, Vlasic, Murray.... you want White in that group? We will need a big stay at home defenseman to match the ones we keep. White isnt that. I thought he was a good bottom pair and its nice having him as a backup to Boyle on the PP but I don't think he is going to fit in the defensive core unless its really cheap and we can get a defensive-defenseman as well in the bottom pair ... carry 7 NHL ready defenseman.

Petrecki would be awesome, but I don't know if he'll be available for the NHL by next year.
What we really need is a big, physical, two way defenseman. I think the days of stay at home Dmen are going away in today's NHL - you need to be able to play D, move the puck, and shot to be an effective Dman in today's nhl.
If it's in the ballpark of 2.5 then I'm fine with that. No doubt he'll want to play for a contender. At the same time, him and Braun are essentially going to be going for the spot on the d-core. Perhaps we'll have to see what kind of summer Braun has and if he's improved defensively.
