I've copied this to a separate thread.

Yesterday, the Eagles lost a game 7, so the timing may be that they wanted to finish the CHL playoffs before making this announcement about moving to ECHL.

What is so different between the old CoHL/UHL/IHL/the CHL and the ECHL? I've seen both....well er I haven't seen the CHL in person but I have seen the combination of what made up the IHL and the CHL is like the UHL really, just from having followed minor league hockey all these years. The ECHL is a developmental league but if you follow teams out West they tend to have older clubs. The affiliations play a role, but in theory take a guy like Todd Robinson or Robin Bouchard. Really good players with Muskegon and such. I'm convinced a good AA player is a good AA player. The difference however may be the minutes they play(sort of I guess in reverse to the UHL) the younger guys in most instances will get the most ice time, while in the UHL it was the vets who got top line minutes because your goal was to win.

Well, I think we know who will lead the league in sellouts next year, LOL. 311 in a row. Didn't the Avs once have a streak around that number?

Wonder if they will team up with the Avs?

Apparently this had been in the works for THREE YEARS. So it wasn't a surprise coming for them.

Also I was wondering....does the history of the CHL version of the franchise remain in tact like it did when Elmira joined the league in 07 or did the Eagles purchase the Victoria franchise so it's a fresh new start?

It may be the first one but definitely not the second one. The Salmon Kings franchise was returned to the league, it and its history are done. As the league sees it, this is a completely new franchise with no prior ECHL history. Not sure if the CHL history will be recognized by the ECHL.

Interesting read.

The Texas GM is VERY bitter:

Stuff from yesterdays Colorado paper regarding the move:

http://www.reporterherald.com/Sports-Story.asp?ID=33030

http://www.reporterherald.com/Sports-Story.asp?ID=33032

It's too bad they didn't do this press conference out on the rink like we did and signed a player from the previous years squad to get the juices flowing. It seemed like a media only event(or so thats the vibe I got while watching the press conference)

However, does Colorado retains rights to players from this season? Conversely, is Colorado completely new and have no rights to a protected list?

Hey you were the guy I was looking for the other day? When are you goin to Vegas for the IRL race? Anyway, the Wranglers home opener is the 21st October(Rapture Day, LOL)

All Colorado players become free agents. So because of that they are NOT allowed to have a protected list, defeats the purpose.. You kinda answered your own question in a way, lol. The CHL has some form of a protected list I believe(but they don't call it that)

The ECHL specifies that players on Protected Lists have to have played a certain number of ECHL games the previous season or been offered a qualifying offer.

The staff have said that the team will be younger than it's CHL predecessors but based on how that team is run and how respected the organization is, they will have no problem re-signing any vets/other returnees they want to.

Yeah, I saw that. Sadly, the IRL race is the weekend before when Vegas is in Alaska. Looks like there won't be anything sportswise in town the weekend I am there. UNLV is out of town and from what people have pieced together, the UFL team will be on the road.

I wasn't sure whether since Colorado hadn't folded as far as a business is concerned. So if anybody had a valid contract and the PLPA I believe is the union in both leagues whether they'd still remain Colorado property. I realize signing a two year deal is unusual in the ECHL/CHL, but I do remember the odd Reading Royal doing that when I used to follow them.

I realize that protected lists and whatnot are largely inconsequental. I mean if player X wants to play for your team, it makes no difference if you protect him, since he will sign anyway. Since I've never followed the CHL really, what other roster differences will the Eagles face? If let's say the entire team were wanting to return could everyone still come back?

It always makes me wonder why both these leagues exist. You'd think the NHL parents would try and steer all their teams to one side or the other. From a developmental standpoint, it seems like the ECHL would be a better idea than the CHL, yet some NHL clubs are in the CHL. Why is this? I realize it boils down to numbers since there are 30 NHL teams and 20 ECHL clubs. But if a NHL team wanted an ECHL affiliate, I'm sure that the ECHL wouldn't say no.

I haven't gone through the roster player by player but I'd say no. The ECHL and CHL have different numbers that determine vet status and the CHL allows more vets. The team's management has said the team will be younger than fans are used to which leads me to believe they're going to bring in a ton of fresh blood.

The NHL teams don't really own the ECHL or CHL teams so it's not a matter of wanting "their" team in one league or the other. If they really want their players in a specific league, they'll affiliate with a team in that league or just send him to a team in that league.

As for why both leagues exist, I personally think more leagues should exist. Leagues will high travel are killing themselves. No one really wants to be in a league that stretches from Fort Wayne to Laredo or Anchorage to Fort Myers for the long term.

I don't agree with that absolute.

NHL New Jersey (parent company) **owns** the ECHL Trenton franchise.

AEG (parent company of NHL LA) owned ECHL Reading (just sold it to the city).

I believe AEG (or a subsidiary of AEG) owns the Ontario Reign too.

The Avs loaned them Tyler Weiman a few years back. They do broadcast Eagles games on Altitude.

Well sure, but I would contest that AEG owning Reading meant nothing, they are a Global Conglomerate afterall.

We all know how the deal in Trenton is. It basically proves why teams should be GLAD to NOT be NHL owned. Nobody else can call up Trenton players but the Devils AHL Affiliate, this hurts recruiting.

Not exactly. If a player is signed to an ECHL-only deal, then he can be called up on PTO to (theoretically) any AHL team.

The Sharks, for instance, only promise a max of 5-6 players assigned to their ECHL affiliate.

NHL Kings, AHL Manchester have had ECHL Ontario as (one of) their ECHL affiliate(s) since the franchise started playing.
