Also, how the **** is one supposed to earn money from Culture and Casinos? I can't earn anything with those specializations.

They are for tourism, you need to have public transit nearby. The Culture buildings will generally attract tourists and they will stay in the hotel rooms you provide at the casinos (also spending their money at the casinos, hopefully).

I'd recommend building it near a train station, i've found it's the highest volume public transport with minimal investment for you, money-wise.

If you plop a building that can schedule events (expo center, stadium, opera house(s)), the events will bring in a lot of tourists... just make sure you have infrastructure/public transit set up to handle it (it also makes the events more profitable/likely to sell out). One of my cities had a stadium and an opera house so I scheduled 2 events on the same day just to see what would happen...

The micromanagement is one of the biggest turnoffs for me now. I wanna watch a city grow, not spend time trying to manage each building.

If you're not into micromanaging, then SimCity might not be for you

How do you go about designing your cities? I have one successful city that is actually earning money but, the rest are riddled with crime, arsonists and sickly sims. :S

First things first, don't listen to the zone adviser guy, he's a ****ing liar. With that being said, make a habit of checking the population details page for what you need in terms of unfilled jobs (need more/increased density housing), goods not sold (need more commercial or freight shipment), unemployment (need more industry/commercial of the specified income level).

If you're talking about roads, I generally tend to do a grid layout with a high density avenue as a backbone with medium density roads cross-crossing it. I've started experimenting with different configurations for the entries into the regions with mixed results so far.

I took your suggestion and used it to great effect. I've got a left and right medium exit, but they are staggered to take advantage of the AI. So, they operate as a mostly one-way exit off the main drag. No traffic jams yet, and I had some legendary ones.

I built the Vu tower. Not sure about the novelty of it. Plenty of taxi tourists, which my commercial loves, but the henchmen thing seems like a gimmick.

I am building a international airport on HF NA East 1, and it's slow as **** and expensive in terms of forgone resources. Better be worth it.

Education reduces crime. It also techs up industry. I've got a nuclear powerplant, so my university (full sized, ugh, 6k+ an hr) has to stay on 24/7 or else I risk a meltdown. Once a building gets 'educated', it stays educated until otherwise abandoned or destroyed. So you can toggle off your schools to save money sometimes. Education also means more recycling, which means less in the dump and more money in your pockets.

My city has around 45k citizens now. I'm moving along! My biggest problem is that I can't seem to keep enough low class citizens for my low class jobs. What's the solution?

You could lower land value like plopping random (non powered) water towers next to places where you want land value to stay low. But tread lightly.

Here's my city:

I figured as much, but is there not a more favorable way of doing it? Is it because my industry is at the lowest tech that they're considered low wealth? Also, how am I supposed to know what kind of jobs utilities take?

I find that aspect of the game is TRULY lacking. They make it difficult to correspond industry, commercial and utilities in terms of jobs.

Absolutely, it's one of the earlier services I build. Reduces fire, crime and likelihood of getting sick. High school educated Sims will recycle (letting you use the recycling plant to lots of $) and it will increase the tech level of your industry as already said above (which will be cleaner and benefit your Sims' health).

It's true, he does nothing but lie to you.

Well, sort of. His goal is for you to always be expanding, he just doesn't always specify density over new zones.

So I had thought my Sims were commuting to a different city for school and I thought I had sent emergency fire help while I developed other parts of the city...

It wasn't the games fault, I actually forgot to do it

This game is pretty pathetic. I built the international airport. Awesome, right? No. It dumps 800 taxi cabs a day into your city. And they don't go anywhere, park, or shop. When you click on them, it literally says 'going somewhere'. I tried to appease these yellow demons by building more commercial and tourist traps, but no luck. To prove the point that they go nowhere, I built a loop with nothing on it and 1 exit. Many of the taxis that entered the loop just kept driving around in circles. This was in the middle of my industrial district, where there were 0 attractions.

The ****** AI, and terrible tourist programming basically killed off my city with Big Ben in it. Had to abandon what was once a profitable 150k city. No amount of changing the roads around would help get rid of a thousand+ taxis just driving around for fun.

I also had the density bug where a city with 150k only has 15k people actually doing something between shopping, working and being a student.

A bit of patience has me sitting on a city with virtually no fire/police/health protection, no schools, no parks, and 300K in the bank making 7.5K/hr.

The region is a bit hilly so it's screwing up a perfect grid which is fine but it's going to be a challenge to update and upgrade.

EA caught on to the India loop hole.

At least people paid some money for it as opposed ti pirating it.
Why was it so cheap in India anyways?
