This is a bold ass trade, too. Gotta love it for that reason alone.

We need to qualify him at more than $2.1m or he becomes a UFA. There's no way we do that or that any team trades for him at that price. He's a de-facto UFA.
Right, but there was talk of the rangers being open to offering him a multi year deal, probably just 2, at much lower money. If a team would be willing to offer that to Gilroy, we might have a taker for his neg rights.....I mean ANYTHING at this point would be just a bonus.
Oh and I'll add this, the Rangers are shaping up to have an excellent Swedish contingent... Good mix of North American and European players in their system:
Sweden:
Carl Hagelin
Tim Erixon
Oscar Lindberg
Jesper Fasth
DZ still has to prove he can play at the NHL level again, so I wouldn't necessarily just pencil him in.
And no, under no circumstance would I trade any of the top 4. The idea is NOT to have 2 washouts on your 3rd pair like we had last year. Although Eminger was reasonable, Gilroy not.
Why in the world would you want to give up a pick in a much deeper, much better draft?
You have a year to get that pick back. We may not have star players year in year out but now the depth is there to make player for pick move, more directly offseason and trade deadline. And it may become more necessary when salary is involved.
Either way, I'm glad the deal was made and we got Erixon, next move - make the #15 pick count.
If he returns to Sweden, it'll be good for some of the other young D on this team to increase their value in a trade. Who knows if Valentenko, Kundratek, and our other D prospects will get the chance to play in the NHL after this season with McIlrath, Erixon, and MDZ as guys who didn't play at the end of the season on the NHL level.
This also begs the question: Which one of the guys will get traded? Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Sauer, MDZ, McIlrath, Erixon are all to be or currently are NHL caliber D. Then we also have guys like Kundratek, Valentenko, and Pashnin who are potential NHL guys that weren't top picks. That's a D core that goes 10 deep in value to an organization. Not too many teams have that with the youth the Rangers have. We should be able to turn some of those guys in a trade to get an ELITE forward to play with Gaborik AND Richards.
I've killed Sather for his lack of creativity. But I got to give it to him on this one.
Really? So if Sather finds out awhile ago that this could happen you'd be shocked to hear he would be a contender? Or that he'd actually land him for a decent return?

Wow what a deal, don't know much about the kid but if he is the real deal I see a blockbuster deal coming in the near future to acquire a top 6 LW. If we sign Brad Richards, I see Anisimov, MDZ, 1st rounder in exchange for a top 6 LW talent.
Well that is a real payment but he is a real prospect.
Not listed on hfboards top 50, but a stellar performance in the WC and good play in th SEL at a young age indicate to me that he could be a nice 2nd pairing player, perhaps.
Now I won't have to hear about how great Horak is going to be any more.
I have had a feeling for some time that the Rangers are going to have a big off season. I expect a move for a top 6 forward. Torts has said this team isn't talented enough, they want to win sooner than later.
im not buying the "now we're gonna trade MDZ" talk, if anything you're going to see a dog fight over the next year or two to determine who stays, but i'd imagine both are in their long term plans for the time being
id actually imagine that this could potentially hurt Sauer or even Girardi the most when Mcilrath is ready to play
staal - girardi
MCD - Erixon
MDZ - McIlrath
(not necessarilly pairings but just a lineup)
nonetheless, at this point its safe to say that with our D prospects, a fire has been lit under the ass of every defensman not named Staal.....and that sound you heard earlier was the door hitting gilroy in the ass on his way out of new york
