Still no Couturier, and it also cements my belief that Noebels was a pick the Flyers really liked.
I was surprised that he fell into our laps. I thought he was a possible 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Apparently us and Vancouver showed the most interest him before the actual draft took place.

I think 2nd round is a bit of a reach though.

I was kinda hoping one of the guys could push him to the 4th line this year but a Betts-Talbot-Nodl line is too small IMO. Since Betts is gone after this season I could definitely see that happening next year.

Everyone loves to hate on Nodl, but really there's no reason for it. He's a legitimate third liner in the NHL. Right now he can be a very good third liner once he hits his prime. I'll take 25-40 points a year for cheap with solid defensive play.

Either way...

vanRiemsdyk - Giroux - xxxxx
Hartnell - Briere - Voracek
Simmonds - Schenn - xxxxx
xxxxx - Talbot - Nodl

If everything works the way I'm expecting it to, we'll have two spots open in the top 9 for the season after next assuming one player can beat out Nodl.

vanRiemsdyk - Giroux - Voracek
Hartnell - Schenn - Briere
Simmonds - Couturier - Read/Wellwood/Nodl/Akeson

I wouldn't say I hate Nodl just that I hope a young guy is ready to make the jump up and be the better option. I would love a guy to jump up and be the best player on the team too but thats just not realistic, a prospect being a better 3rd line winger then Nodl on the other hand is not exactly far fetched. Again nothing against Nodl as you said he is solid defensively, will be a mainstay on the pk this year IMO and can pot a dozen goals for cheap. I guess I'm just spoiled from having proven 20+ goal scorers make up the top three lines the past several years.

Well, the Hockey News draft preview had him in the 2nd round, IIRC, so it wasn't unthinkable.

So what does the phantoms team look like this year. Are they actually going to be competative?

Read - Kalinski - Wellwood
Testwuide - Holmstrom - Zolnierczyk
Legein - Pither - Hamel
Rinaldo/Sestito - Someone - Clackson

Marshall - Bourdon
Giant Dane - Jancevski (C)
??? - ???

Backlund

No idea about the lines, just listed the players that i knew. Anywhere near?

Do we have Hamel signed? It is to an AHL contract if that is the case, is there anywhere one can find out about what players are signed to those deals? I think they liked that Cullen Eddy guy last year, maybe he will be back as well? Although, we can field an entire team just by the guys we have already signed to NHL deals.

It looks like there will be one forward spot on the Flyers roster for these guys to fight for in camp. I'll just go ahead and pencil in Wellwood there, since I hope it will be him. That leaves us with (also not really lines, just trying to get them somewhat in the right position)

McGinn - Kalinski - Holmstrom
Sestito - Read - Zolnierczyk
Testwuide - Pither - Akeson
Rowe - Brown - Harper
Legein - Rinaldo

On d we have

Gustafsson - Walker
Marshall - Hostetter
Bourdon - Lehtivuori
Jancevski - Manning
Lauridsen

Gustafsson (or maybe even Walker) could be in the NHL perhaps and Lehtivuori might return to Finland(?)

Leighton
Backlund
Bacashihua

in goal, unless there's a trade done. That team will most likely not compete for Calder Cup, but hopefully it will be a lot better than last season at least.

I've also assumed that Leighton and Walker will clear waivers...

Edit: According to the AHL board here, we haven't got any players signed to AHL contracts yet.

Didn't Lehtivuori go to Finland mid-way through the season last year?

Is he coming back to play for the Phantoms this year or is he going to stay in Finland?

He did go back last year, but he's still Flyers property and he has not got a deal with any team in Europe for next year as far as I know.

Clackson was dealt for Bryzz Wizz

I assume the other G will be Bacashihua or Leighton

The missing D's should be Manning and hopefully Walker

The whole waiver thing has me confused but I'm not totally convinced the Flyers will carry 8 d so one of the question marks on d could be gus or they may risk bart as well.

I don't think Hamel is signed.

The 4th line center could be Rinaldo if he doesn't make the team.

I think Sesito will be a Flyer. Just my gut feeling.

McGinn will be a Phantom

My rough guess:

Testwuide Holmstrom Read
Zolnierczyk Pither Akeson
Legin Kalinsky Wellwood
Shelly Rinaldo Harper

Walker Bourdon
Marshall Janceveski
Lauriseden Manning

Leighton
Backlund

I really hope they sign Hamel. Their started to score goals when he was signed.

What I see happening.

Testwuide-Holmstrom-Read
Wellwood-Akeson-Hamel
Zolnierczyk-Pither/Kalinski- T.Brown
Harper-Kalinski/Pither-Rinaldo
Legein

Really hope Ryan doesnt get any contract and gets an AHL deal. Would like him back in the top 6-9. Worked very well with Holmstrom and Testwuide

Defense is where it gets tricky. Wayyyy to many defensive guys. This is if Gustafsson doesnt get signed.

Marshall-Janceveski
Bourdon-Walker
Lauridsen-Manning
Eddy-Hostetter

Janceveski is playing top 4 no matter what. I liked him. A solid vet and the captain of the team. The players all like him.

Leighton
Bacashihua

Backlund is supposedly going to be loaned back to Sweden.

Are you sure he's going to be loaned back to Sweden? Unless he just doesnt really want to be in NA, why would he turn down a guaranteed $800k? Or does he still get paid that if he's loaned out?

Wont say I know for sure, but I remember there being a euroflyers article claiming that there is a significantly high chance. I dont think they signed the new guy Baca, just to play in the ECHL. He has put up some solid numbers in the AHL.

That really isn't a bad team at all. You have an all-star goaltender in leighton, Some big size and vets on defense, and a top 9 that if they pan out can score some goals. Looking for a monster season from testwuide to the point where he is considered for call ups from the flyers. If Read starts lighting it up he could be another.

Just being out of a division with Hershey, WB/S and Binghamton makes them better before they step on the ice.

I thought I saw this posted somewhere on Broad Street Hockey but, maybe it was here?

Here is an article about Gustafsson with some quotes from Laperriere about him.

Laperierre compares him to Timonen, but it seems like he was saying he needs to work more on his defense and get more experience. He isn't saying he will be as good as Timonen though.

Quote:
"He's going to have to [learn to defend] if he wants to play at this level," Laperriere said. "I mean, there's no choice. He won't get bigger."
Quote:
"He's that kind of guy who plays a similar game to Kimmo Timonen: very smart, and good offensive flair out there," Laperriere said.

"They're both lefthanded, and they're smooth with the puck. They're smooth skaters. But Kimmo's got the experience. He came into the league really late and gained all of that experience in Finland and where he played, and came in very poised. They both have similar personalities: laid back and very poised. I think it's only time for [Gustafsson].

"Kimmo had his time to learn, and now I think Gus is going to need his time to learn how to be a good NHL defenseman."
