Yeah his pick was a little surprising to me too. I don't think I had read anything about him other than I was expecting late 2nd/3rd. And when I did read about him right after drafting him, I thought "well sounds interesting, but he'll just be a 3rd line player."
As to the bold parts, well yes I think he might do well at that role. And when I thought he'll just be a 3rd rounder that's fine. But then are we stunting him at that role in the future? With his clutch playoffs I'm now thinking possible 2nd liner. Don't want to screw that up. I have seen a lot of kids come up early when they're good defensively and never develop the offense.
Yeah I thought about that too, a year with him increasing his numbers could do wonders and could help give him a shot in a top 6 role. He can easly transfer over his game to the NHL because of his style. He is going to have an interesting training camp.

A great 3rd line role player who can grind, play defense, and score hard working goals can be more valuable than a mediocre 2nd line scorer who has more offensive production. Especially in the playoffs. And besides, our 3rd line kinda sucks these days.
McMillan is a good start for building a future high-caliber 3rd line, but he's going to need help.

True. I'm all for good 3rd liners. I've been advocating for one in FA for like 3 seasons now.
But we also have a hole for 2nd line prospect talent, and one would think that's harder to fill and more worthy of a 2nd round pick.
Speaking of 3rd liners, did you ever notice how completely unable our team has been in developing them from scratch? We have a lot of guys who come in and look good for a season, but no one ever sticks. Carter, Miller, Brown, Bodie, Chipchura, Beleskey.
Is there something about Carlyle's system that allows them to perform well defensively for the 1st season, but then lose his trust? Should we worry about McMillan? Does it mean Smith-Pelly is more likely to have a good season next year but also stall?
Hm. On 2nd thought maybe a 2nd round pick is worth it if it actually results in a real NHL checking line player.
So we have to sign Scott Valentine and Justin Vaive by today right? Or else their rights are lost; anyone else?
Damn I really hope we will sign Valentine. I have high hopes in him and Kevin Lind to become those kind of 5-7 D you need to win. Exactely those kind of role players every team needs to go deep in the playoffs. Lind will stay at college until his graduation but I hope our staff gets him. Otherwise I hope we draft him again with the 5th rounder.
About Vaive, well big body but i have no clue. Two years ago I thought he or Josh Brittan will be the ideal LW for Getzlaf/Perry. None of them became something. Will be interessting if we sign one.
Overall I'm surprised that we only signed Schofiled out of College so far.
What do you guys think? Drafted in 2010, First Round, 29th overall, by the Ducks, in 65 GP last year with Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL, he scored 45 goals, 35 assists, for 80 points, I think he will crack the lineup next year and play full time for Anaheim, watch out he may surprise alotta people.
To be clear, Scott Valentine needs to be signed before June 1st or he will re-enter the draft. I have no knowledge on whether or not Anaheim will sign Valentine.

He will most likely get a 9 game try out depending on how he does at the camp. He has a good low center of gravity, so I think he will be able to play his game at the nhl level if he gets lucky. If not, its back to juniors.
