This DOES spell the end of Hamrlik, IMO. Not because of money, but because we clearly need to upgrade our mobility on D and having Spacek, Gill and Hamrlik would mean 50% of our D are significantly below average in terms of mobility.

I'm tired of our D standing at the blueline handing out admission tickets to the Habs' zone.

The salary paid shows the organization respect for Gill and his leadership.
As for Hammer, we need better in our top-4...
You really think Hammer is top-4 of a SC winning team?

I love Hammer but he will not bring us to SC in a top-4 role.

We have the goaler, a good two-way offense...
Time to tune the defense! Hammer is not top-4: Sorry... I love him but he has to go!
we cant replace ONE leader ? are we THAT weak in that dept ? really ?

Marino is saying Markov will be resigned 2 years at the same salary..

So at the moment it looks like:

Markov Gorges

Gill Subban

Spacek Weber/Diaz/emelin

I would like Gauthier to sign Bieksa, the guy is an amazing defenseman who can play physical

Markov Bieksa

Gill Subban

Gorges Spacek/Weber

When your young core (Suban, Price, Gorges, etc.) says over and over again that the guy is key to this team and the locker room, why would you not bring him back????

I just don't get anyone that's complaining about this signing. And at 2.25M, c'mon, its a good price for an NHL vet that's a great PK specialist and can log close to 20 minutes. And he's a great playoffs guy also.

People analyze a team and the game too much like its a chess match and we are handling toys and plastic pieces without feelings and emotions. Gill is NOT a better Dman than Hamr, but he is more valuable to us based on our needs.

Welcome back Hal

Pacioretty: Congrats to Hal Gill for re-signing ... awesome guy and glad he is going to be back #skillzy

Gionta: Great to have the big man back in MTL, now all he has to do is Babysit PK! Heads up PK!! about 11 hours ago via Twitter for iPad

Subban: Pretty happy #Skillzy got the extension! Congrats Bud! See you Grand Prix weekend! http://t.co/PdJskSo about 11 hours ago via Twitter for iPad

I like the signing.

Also is this the Pam19 thread? Trying for a record number of posts in a row instead of putting it all into one post lol?

Hal Gill - The Glue Guy by Arpon Basu

Highly recommended reading, man I love Arpon Basu. Even when I sometimes disagree with him, his pieces are always a very good read.

I'm happy... don't see the negative in this signing... I'm pretty sure Wiz will reach the $5M in UFA on the market, so even though I love the guy and want him back, it's too much money, so it'll be the same scenario as Souray and Streit. Now, it's all about Gorges and Markov. I personally want them both back and that's about it. We also got to start looking at offense, where we're lacking in a lot of fields. We've got a full month till July the 1st, so let's get ready for some action!! Yayy have a nice summer boys and girls!

Arpon Basu has become my favourite journalist. He's actually made being a Habs fan more fun that it already is. I always enjoy his pieces, I love his insight. I also like the way he isn't totally negative but isn't afraid to call out someone either.

I knew we'd re-sign this guy and I knew with the exception of Emelin we'd likely be pretty much the same team but with Hammer gone.

I'm actually happy we signed Gill, he's one of the most undervalued members of our squad and is slept on by fans. Sure he isn't fancy, he makes mistakes here and there but come playoff time not only is he a rock but he's a true leader on our squad. For many years our younger guys lacked the mentoring they needed in order to really gel with the team. Now that we have guys like that people complain that they're overpaid. It's 2.25 mil, the least he would have gotten was likely 1.75 million, it's 500k overpayment for a guy who brings a lot more to our team than people lead on. (Realistically 250k overpayment)

Assuming Markov is back and we have an open spot if Wiz doesn't come back, we can pick up a good player on FA, the player I wanna see being moved by Gauthier is Spacek, if he can move him for his last season that would be great

Me too, but I'm hoping for something along the lines of:

Markov-Gorges
Wizniewski-Subban
Gill-Emelin

The problem ATM is Spacek and the fact that Emelin won't think one second to GTFO if he ends up as a 7th defenseman.

Do I ever hope we can get rid of Spacek.

What is so funny ? Yes he's injury prone, but he would only cost 1 year, he's solid in both ends of the ice and is physical enough to be a good partner for Markov.

IMO, a much wiser choice than to overpay for Wiz.

Love Gill - I think he's a great leader and a good role-model for Subban. Brings lots of experience and skill. Glad they picked him up for 1 more yr.
