There was no better power forward in the game, IMO. Neely easily. Although I do like Shanny.

Actually, the year he scored 50 in his first 43 games, he was one of the best players in the league, if not the best. He dominated every night by combining size and skill like few before him. If not for injury, he would have pushed Gretzky's 92 goals record.

If he wasn't top five, he was definitely top 10 or 15. The top-end talent in the NHL today is nowhere what it was 15 years ago when Cam was at his peak.

Going up against Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Yzerman, and Chelios couldn't have helped, though.

I understand that. Shanny can play the game a ton as well. I voted for Neely but it was very close in my mind. When I postedd those comments about Shannys fight card it was responding to a question about the players toughness.

I think that would have been a hell of a bout, both of these guys can chuck em.

For a 4 year period, Cam Neely was a great player. That's it. Yes, he was scary, and a threat to score every shift, but he couldn't keep it up for very long. And he was just average in Vancouver before coming to a stacked Boston team. Shanahan played on some very bad teams, too, in Jersey and St. Louis and Hartford, before coming to Detroit. But his career, while maybe quieter, is just as impressive if not more so.

BTW, Neely DID NOT score 50 goals in 43 games. He scored 50 goals in 49 games that he played in that season. Still very very good, but let's not get carried away.

FWIW, he did score 50 in 43, since his 50th goal came in the 43rd game that he played. He went scoreless over the last 6 games.

In their primes who do you take. I say Neely by a slim margin.

neely

Cam Neely is equal parts great player and mystique. Even before he met with Ulfie, his numbers weren't blowing anybody away.

He never broke 100 points, and averaged less than a point per game after it was all said and done. And this during the NHL's high-scoring era.

However, as a Bruin, which is when he broke out, Neely averaged more than a point a game:

524 - 344 - 246 - 590
