Zenon Konopka

Thinking the flyers should target this guy commending his gritty play, strong faceoff numbers and “high leadership quotient

Mmmm quotient.

But seriously, this has been discussed a million times. To the point many are now in the "I don't understand the Konopka love" column.

His name is AWESOME thought right? Like best name in the world? Agreed.

Cause we need toughness. And Konopka has that and is cheap and useful. Does anybody wanna see us get pushed around by the ultra tough Buffalo Sabres again?

Konopka would look good on the Flyers. He'd be a step up from Carcillo.

I could see Laviolette putting a heavy harness on Konopka to break him taking stupid overaggressive penalties, and putting it in his head that he's here to win faceoffs on the 4th line and PK, and to play hard-nosed but not undisciplined. Can you offer a bonus for under 100 PIMs?

Where are you going to put him? Betts has the 4th line center spot.

He wouldn't if Konopka were here.

I love how the justification for getting Shelley is falling apart in only 1 year. Konopka is now being released by the Isles, and Boogard (RIP) is dead. Now we have a goon making mucho dinero to compete with no one in the division.

Yeah, but it's the Flyers. He'll probably be in orange and black come October.

And have a contract that pays him $500,000 too much.

How can you play on the pk, if your in the penalty box almost all game long...

Out of his 307 penalty minutes, ONLY 125 were fighting majors. For arguments sake, he than takes 182 minutes worth of penalites (dont know how many were game misconducts). On the Flyers, including fighting majors, Hartnell led with 142. Dude takes a ******** of penalties.

Certainly, it would be a huge concern. I don't know nearly enough of the type of calls Konopka typically takes; whether he's lazy with his stick, likes the big hit too much, or has to take a guy down because a teammate messed up his assignment. Probably all of the above. This would be a scenario where Holmgren would have to sit down over video with Laviolette and ask him if he thinks he could work with Konopka.

I don't want to be dismissive of the Islanders, but if Konopka were to be playing for a competitive team, would he cut down on the stupidity?

Konopka had 1:32/game in PK time, but consider the Islanders were the most penalized team in the league, but I'm not sure how much Trevor Gillies factors into that.

Konopka is smart, and coachable, and he is a smart man (he's involved in a few business including wineries), faceoffs are good, but still redundant with Shelley around. He could take faceoffs, but wouldn't have to play center.

Well... according to NHL.com, he averaged barely 10 minutes a game. Other than Gill, he had the worse TOI.

Gilles took 15 minors compared to Konopka's 31. Second to Konopka was Tavares.

I dont know why people around here are so fascinated by people with high penalty minutes.
Why not put guys on the 4th line who you know can play the game and can contribute to the team besides adding 250 PIMS

In all honesty, even if he may be 4th line kind of guy... I'm scared to have him because of him being a headcase (I think he's too volatile).

Because 250 PIM=Not being pushed around=Winning!

Wait a minute, the Islanders finished in what place?
