Here's hoping Shanny is less of a clueless, inconsistent dingbat than Colin Campbell. At the very least, Shanny doesn't have a son in the league he'll try and protect.

I'll still wait for really celebrating until things ACTUALLY improve.

This should have happened a long time ago when those emails got out. Finally, a good move.

I have a feeling those played a major role but they decided to let the season finish (nearly) before making the move to be classier to him. Didn't deserve any such treatment imo though.

Give it about 2 years before Shanahan is the most unpopular man in hockey...

I don't see it that way. Shanny is a lot smarter than Colon Cancer was/is.

I hope Shanny cleans up the mess that has become the 'head shot debacles'

I think he will. Shanny had a concussion in 07, I think. He's been consistent on calls for concussion research too. He seems to realize how big of a problem head shots are.

He is a part of the equipment research team or something of the sort. He is pro-active.... unlike the ****** Colon.

Campbell was an idiot no doubt about that. But its a hard job to do. With every decision you make, chances are you're pissing off some fan base. And fans tend to forget the times you sided with them and remember the times you came down hard against their team. Example was when Pens fans were up in arms about the suspensions from the Islanders game completely forgetting all the times their many goons got away with stuff.

My biggest hope is that the league starts to develop some consistency with what what is worthy of a suspension and for how long

Personally, I was absolutely repulsed by that. For what Colie stands for, would be a complete slap in the face for an organization that holds themselves to high standards.

Brian Burke did this job before Campbell and I don't remember all the nonsensical decisions back then and it didn't hurt Burke's rep. No one could do a worse job than Campbell. When they moved Walkon out and Gregson in heading up the refs, the games started getting called a lot better. This is a great move.

Let me first say that everything I've ever read or heard about Shanahan suggests that he is a great guy with a lot of charachter and so forth, but I still would have liked to see someone more removed from players currently playing in the NHL. Colin Campbell should have stepped down as soon as his son made it to the big show, even if he'd done a superb job previously.

Shanahan isn't in the same kind of a situation, but still the first time a Detroit player or someone else that he played with during his active career Shanahans neutrality will come into question - be it fair or not.

This is why I would love some sort of committee. Everyone who has gotten involved enough in hockey to be considered for this job is going to have some sort of bias, no matter how small. I'd love something like 3 retired referees, 2 retired forwards, and 2 retired defenseman, or something like that.

There was a crop of emails relating to NHL discipline that were released for whatever reason, with names and such blanked out. A journalist looked at the dates on the emails and was able to fill in the blanks. It showed that Campbell was EXTREMELY biased regarding calls against his own son. He wanted refs strung up for penalizing his son, more or less. There's more to it than that, I'm sure the article is floating around somewhere.
