They won't. They are going after Bryzgalov with the cash if anything cause Roloson is old. He played well but he can be replaced.
I agree they need an upgrade in goal, but remember where Yzerman learned his craft, Detroit has never had superior goaltending, other than Hasek's short stint...I think Stevie Y follows the Wings model.

He split the 90's between Calgary and Dallas...good runs with both.

The wild card is Richards giving TB a sweetheart deal to go back to a team that is poised to be a contender, familiar and where he was generally adored in the community

Option years are not allowed in the current CBA. Perhaps in the next one, but that won't help us now.

I think you guys are going overboard on keeping the years low. I realize a lot of players have broken down in the early to mid 30's, but there are others who haven't. Usually it's the players who get by on smarts that age well. Richards is such a player IMO.

Maybe a middle ground would be 6 years / 39 mil, 6.5 mil cap hit. I could deal with that. Anything under 7 mil cap hit is a win IMO, no matter how many years.

The cap will be a lot higher in 6 years. These vets are seldom too costly late in their career. Don't worry about it. If he plays here for 5 years, his lockerroom prescence will be worth 6m per in like a 80m cap.

thats completely unknown at this point...the cba is up after this year, and would it really surprise anyone if bettman threw away another season to rollback the salaries to 2004 levels to put the cap back at $39 mil and also try to lower the players %.

Same was said about DRURY!

Still like Drury's locker room prescence at $7 mill a year?

That's not the point. Drury's cap is 30m lower.

actually, you are missing the point. When we acquired Drury his cap hit was close to what Richards will probably get. We have had to deal with Drury's cap hit for a number of years now, without him producing much.

There's no way they can go back that low. If anything, they will try to lower the percentage from 57% to around 50%.

If the cap is 63.5 mil next year, then the cap would drop to about 55.7 mil the following year, before factoring in increased revenue.

If the cap does drop, there would have to be compliance buyouts, unless they are going to do a rollback on player salaries, which is a possibility, but I can't see the union agreeing to that again.

He played one season in Toronto...he played more seasons in NJ and probably had a chance to be more familiar with NYC in that case

It's June 3rd. I like speculation as much as the next guy but in the case of brad richards its hard for me to find a reason to get worked up over every possibility that may happen 27 days from now. I've taken the same approach towards all of this all season, with the exception of the trade deadline because acquiring actually seemed like a possibility at the time. I feel like every other day there is that rumor and this rumor about who he would play for and what city he likes or whatever. But the bottom line is when July 1st comes he will either be a ranger or not. I dont see the reason to worry about Toronto, LA, TB, BUF, and CAR. If its meant to be then sather will make it happen. I mean how much can you go on about one guy and all of it just being speculation? I know its tough since were out of the playoffs and trying to kill time.

sorry, just venting because i feel like a lot of people are just when it comes to this.

Maybe we should discuss Drury's contract a bit more as well.

Im with you, I'm not gonna stress it
I have confidence in Sather, Torts and NY
Sather is rarely denied when it comes to something he wants (for better or for worse)

I wouldn't give him any more than 6 years.

Even that may be pushing it for a 31 y/o.

Not really. We all knew Drury and Gomer were overpaid by about 2 million, give or take, for their production levels (and I'm talking about their expected production in the first few years of their contracts at the time of the signing) . You don't think Richards is worth 6.5 or 7.5 million for the numbers he'll likely produce over the next 2-3 years? If you wanted to make a comparison, it would be that signing Richards for 8.5 or 9.5 million right now would be a similar overpayment to Drury and Gomez. Overpaid by about 2 million right off the bat, with high potential for disaster later in their contracts / careers.

That could work, but it'd be an extreme squeeze.

You can't, under the new circumvention rule, have a drop off of $5MM in 1 season. Let's say he made $8MM in 12-13. He would not be able to make $3MM the year after.

I'd just as soon not completely gut the core of the team for Lecavalier.

I still see Lundqvist, Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal, Stepan, McDonagh, Sauer, Boyle, Prust, Del Zotto and some great new players in that lineup like Schenn, Simmonds, Johnson, Kreider. Zuccarello may end up becoming part of the core, as well as Erixon. Oh not to mention, if we add Richards, the entire dynamic of the team is changed for the better, and Richards immediately becomes part of our core for the duration of his contract. I don't really think trading Anisimov, Girardi (while his value as likely at an all-time high), and Thomas for a 1B center is completely gutting our core.
