Ruff shuffles coaching staff, lets McCutcheon go

http://wgr550.com/Sabres-Ruff-shuffl...staff/10017615

Quote:
WGR Sports Radio 550 has learned that Lindy Ruff has released Associate Coach Brian McCutcheon from his staff.

Sources say McCutcheon is in limbo right now. If the Sabres wind up buying the Rochester Amerks, McCutcheon could have a role there. If that doesn't happen, he may just be released.

Quote:
The top two candidates to replace McCutcheon are former Sabres Captain Mike Foligno who's an assistant in Anaheim and local product Kevyn Adams who's been given more responsibility in each of the last two seasons on Ruff's staff.
Who is going to talk to Ray between periods now?

Although I'm sure Marcus would find it really awesome to have his dad coaching him, I wonder how it would sit with the rest of the team to have a coach with a son on the team...

Why does Buffalo have to always have a circumstance like that?

Hey, while we're at it, let's trade for Nick too(in a package with Spezza)...

Love this. New blood behind the bench is necessary in my opinion. I'd have no problem with McCutcheon going to the AHL if we get Rochester.

I wish they would go outside the organization altogether.

WTF are you talking about?

When has Buffalo ever had a father coach his son?

I bet the rest of the team will be so upset if Marcus's dad is a coach. Look out Marcus Foligno's going to lead the team's forwards in ice time next year and will be the new captain.

WOW! Talk about a surprise - who would have ever figured Ruff to realize what so many fans sensed about McCutcheon's ineffectiveness, or to finally be willing to mix up the status quo and comfort level by making a change to his staff?

This is great news IMO......

Foligno, as a close teammate and leader on teams Ruff played on, makes some sense - and sure would add intrigue if his son gets any call-up this season from the AHL.

If the Sabres don't want to re-sign Grier but also don't want to just cut him loose from the organization, I wonder if Ruff may consider him too. He'd be a great choice of relating to the players and keeping the role model so many of them said they look up to.

It might sound like a far-fetched idea and unlikely to really happen but, an ideal choice IMO to fill the tactical/technical area that Ruff and Patrick aren't renowned for would be Barry Smith. He was credited for a lot of the puck-pressure systems and left-wing lock the Red Wings used in the '90s to win Cups, and worked under Bowman in Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Detroit. He's been coaching for several years in Europe since being let go by Phoenix a few years ago.

Didn't Pegula talk about expanded coaching and scouting staffs?

Maybe there will be more than one spot.

Hopefully it's new blood from outside the current organization structure. It wouldn't surprise to see McCutcheon joining the player evaluation side of things.

If the rumors are true that Mike Ramsey might leave his position as head coach of the Winnipeg franchise, he would be an excellent replacement. Apparently the new owners could get their own coach or Ramsey could be unhappy with the move. I guess we'll have to wait and see, Adams would be my best guess for what it's worth.

He said more resources will be put into both. That may or may not mean more coaches. Pegula is already spending money on Ruffs input for the lockerroom improvements. Like better team and coaches' video facilities.

How's this for a potential carousel of irony?:

1. Dineen is hired by the NHL team formerly affiliated with Rochester.

2. Sabres buy Rochester, leaving Portland behind.

3. Portland hires McCutcheon.

Dineen out, Foligno in.

McCutcheon out, Adams in.

That according to the guy who tweeted the firing of McCutcheon last night.

Good to see some activity - need to get new blood behind the bench.

You mean Craig not Mike.

Ramsey? Mike left his assistant's position with the Wild last summer. He and Ruff worked together initially and there may have been a little bad blood there when Mike left. If you mean Ramsay, as in Craig, I don't see him stepping down from the Thrash-apeg team.

You're talking about CRAIG Ramsay, who was Atlanta's coach and may or may not return with the move to Winnipeg (though, if Dudley is retained like most early reports suggest, I don't see why he'd replace Ramsay).

MIKE Ramsey left the assistant's job in Minnesota last summer after 10 years with the Wild. At the time, he said he wanted to spend more time with his family in Minnesota but also left the door open that he may return to hockey in the future. If I recall correctly from the Jets' era, Minnesota and Winnipeg are not that far apart by plane.

Really? At the time he was coaching with Ruff in Buffalo, I thought I read that his family was still in Minnesota and when he left, I read that it was a desire to return to his native state more than anything else.

Yes, I meant Craig Ramsay, mistype, wasn't putting much thought into it, busy watching the game. He said himself that he wants to be back but he hasn't heard from True North yet so his situation is a little uncertain.

There was press talk of him going back to run the family sporting goods store. There was other talk of him and Ruff clashing a bit.

Foligno's experience after playing days were done:

Quote:
June 24, 2010, Mike was named as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks.[2] Previously he was the general manager of the Sudbury Wolves, and was also the head coach of the club for whom his elder son Nick played prior to playing in the NHL, and for whom his younger son Marcus currently plays.
