Sharks decline to sign prospects Varone & Bielke (Wrenn unknown), retain Abeltshauser

http://sharks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|SJS|home

Sharks submit a bona fide contract offer to D Konrad Abeltshauser, thereby retaining his rights through the 2011-12 season. They have also announced that they will not sign C Phil Varone or D Dominik Bielke to contracts, relinquishing their rights and allowing both to re-enter the draft.

There appears to be no news on the fate of D William Wrenn, though I would speculate that given they announced specifically that they would not retain the other two players needing to be signed, that Wrenn is more likely to stay in the organization.

WRT Varone, the Sharks may invite him to camp and/or sign him to AHL deal (rather than "waste" a NHL roster spot).

That's risky, isn't it? He had a such good season too, not that I was ever a huge fan.

Varone's got a rep for stepping it up in the playoffs. Too bad.

Absolutely no risk whatsoever involved. The Sharks made a conscious decision not to offer... they elected that path. If they wanted to, they could have retained his rights.

We've made enough free agent signings in recent years that it gives them options when it comes to prospects.

fr4d2384 posted this in the other June 1 thread...sounds like Wrenn didn't need to be signed.

ii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at
the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide
college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in
the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student
through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall
retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the
fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft. The Club
need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such
rights

I don't know anything about being drafted from the USNDP, but:

Drafted: SJS / 2009 NHL Entry Draft
Round: 2nd (43rd overall) PROSPECT BIO

yeah, this was what i was thinking. LZ.

its a little weird, because he was a college player (rights owned for 4 yrs) but turned into a junior player (2 yrs) before the 2nd year from his draft year ended.

Huh. I was thinking that Wrenn would fall into that case (an ex-college student who transfers to Jr keeps his what is roughly his college eligibility window. But I remember seeing someone saying that Wrenn didn't qualify for that because he was drafted prior to college.

I knew I should've checked back into the CBA

There is A LOT of offensive upside to K. Abelthauser, he defensive woes are hard to judge though because his entire junior team sucks at defense.

Supposedly he weighs 212 lbs, and I am surprised if that is correct cause he still looks skinny. Heres to hoping he fills out more and remains strong on his skating. He may not understand how to play good defense early in his development, but we can hope that he learns. If he does, I believe he will move up the depth chart really fast.

Holy crap man you're right! Look at this guys stats from this season:
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=96622

81 pts in 55 games, that's crazy! I know it's OHL and its obviously a big step up to the NHL but still, that is really good. I never really knew who this guy was but he was good man.

It sounds like he really learned a lot and like he really wants to learn more and keep getting better, which is good to hear.
