we need to prepare ourselves for the very real possibility that he won't come back from this. and if he does, i can't see him playing more than this year. he aint playing the last year of that contract for $1mil with a gimpy back. no way.
All kinds or rumours going around that he needs help going up flights of stairs and that it's been lingering a while.
The end of the Alfie era is near and seeing how Spezza will be the next captain...it'll be like being served Alpo after a decade of filet mignon. I dread the day...

Rumours, but absolutely nothing substantive.
Based on everything I have heard, Alfie most likely has a herniated disc, which under normal circumstances will follow a set of treatment steps, and if none of these relieve the pressure on the disc then surgery follows.
Alfie being a elite athlete, I would think his chances for a full recover are excellent.
I just feel bad for him because there will be no golf for most of this summer.

Reason: committed blasphemy, spelt Alfie's name wrong, oh god

In fairness i think it was also managment's plan as well.
How was it part of their plan? If that was the case, they made a retarded move. Could have easily added another year at 500k-1MIL to lower the cap even more if there was no intention of the contract being fulfilled.

Because it's a 35+ contract and we'd end up with two years of lost cap space instead of just one.

Alfie's getting up there in years (the club would have a pretty good idea of his health situation prior to contract signature) and I would imagine management would of done some risk analysis on his contract and said well, we don't mind if he finishes early because more than likely we will be able to place him on LTIR, (as would be the case with this back surgery) thus effectively removing him from the cap. Therefore, not a retarded move, actually quite a smart one.

Reason: clarification
Alfie's been a warrior for this team through all these years. Personally I'd rather he hang em up after the end of this upcoming season if he faces more injury troubles even half as bad. It's time he thinks about himself for a change.
