He did not play golf today (with the prospects that is). As far as his surgery goes, it is considered minor with a 4 - 6 week rehab period, which would take him to the 3rd week in July before he could resume full workouts - if he has the surgery this week.
I'm hoping for a quick and successful recovery as I'm sure everyone else is. Alfie is one of the biggest reasons I became a Sens fan, it would be heartbreaking to see his career go on a huge downswing if the injury persists.

Some people on this board need to have a little faith. There's been nothing so far that indicates Alfie is going to retire. It's like you haven't been paying attention to his entire career. He's always come back from injuries early and healed ridiculously quick. He's always put the teams needs ahead of his own. He is getting older and he will likely retire in the next few years, but speculating and making up what you think his injury might be is childish.
Let's just wait and see, we know he will retire at some point but have a little faith in our captain for once. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not doubting he can come back but I'm gonna be skeptical. Just because we dont want to admit a possibility doesnt me we wont.
Being an elite athlete, with access to round the clock personal training staff, the latest equipment, the latest therapies, I would imagine that Alfie has a much better than 50/50 chance of recovery.

I have dealt with many clients of mine who have has back surgeries and it is about 50/50 whether the surgery is successful. I do know for a fact, however, that if you are in top physical condition and are diligent in rehab, back surgery is very successful. I have clients who sometimes never work again because of a herniated disc, yet we had Gretzky play another 10 years, Roberts play like a beast after his, etc...a lot of my clients did not like Dr. Chow when they met him because he said that they will be fine after surgery and felt he treated them like Senaotrs. well, for good reason. he knows that if you do what is asked and don't have that extra piece of cake, excercise there is no reason why you cannot bounce back from back suregry.

yeah but we all know how much alfie loves cake and hates excercise. he will never play again.
Alfie's getting up there in years (the club would have a pretty good idea of his health situation prior to contract signature) and I would imagine management would of done some risk analysis on his contract and said well, we don't mind if he finishes early because more than likely we will be able to place him on LTIR, (as would be the case with this back surgery) thus effectively removing him from the cap. Therefore, not a retarded move, actually quite a smart one.

I'm saying if you were to do that with no intent of playing the remaining 2 years, you might as well have added 2 low pay years to lower the average cap hit even more. This is if the plan was to put him on LTIR in the last year from the beginning. If the plan was not to play the last year, THEN it's retarded to not have added 2 low pay years like a lot of player's contracts have.

Well I hope all goes well! If he's back or not, he's had a GREAT career with the Sens, and I hope he returns to the organization regardless of whether its as a player or some other position!
Didn't the team buyout Alfie's last contract before he turned 35 so that he wouldn't be signing a 35+ contract? If not, then why did they buyout his last contract? Can somebody clear that up for me?

They did not buy out his contract. Alfie was still under an old CBA contract that had options in it (no longer able to do that under the current CBA), so instead of exercising the options, the Sens bought out the options and signed him to a new contract. It had to be cleared by the NHL and NHLPA, but they all agreed that it was the best way to go. Alfie was the only NHL player that had options, so it was a one off situation. The options buyout is what is listed as the buyout.
