Can Steve Bernier skate and hit? If he's super cheap he could be an option for a 4th line role, but not if he's lazy.
I've always heard about Steve Bernier being slow and lazy, so yeah doesn't look good.. He's probably a poor man's Latendresse.

Bernier is junk, Pouliot is a much superior player.

I guess Yzerman and Boucher (of course two idiots with no hockey knowledge) don't feel the same way.

Yzerman didn't think that their defense was bad enough in the playoffs. Now they not only keept MAB, but they keep a MAB with job security and no contract to play for. Should be fun to watch.

To be fair though, their bad defense were only a game away from the Cup finals. Not that I disagree with the signing being bad though.

I'm surprised of the dollar figure he got (4.5M$ annual) considering the long term.
He's a useful player but more of a supporting cast guy than a go-to offensive producer.

FYI Plekanec 5M$ hit looks real good now lol

MAB was shockingly good for them in the playoffs. And he's useful on the PP. They can carry 7 D-men and shield him and he'll be useful; they don't have the Habs' embarrassment of riches for PP point men.

Yes Brad Richards and the players who didn't get qualifying offers from their teams

Gonna suck on Friday, even more if Richards signs in New York or Toronto. Hopefully there are some trades like last week

From what I've heard, Richards to NYR is all but done. Wouldn't be surprised if that deal goes down in record time.

Its like this every summer, which is part of why I've been for re-signing Wisniewski from the start. Lots of guys were going on about getting Laich and Bieksa but the good players often re-sign with their current team. An imperfect good player is better than a none existant one, which is the risk taken by looking for impact free agents.

It's going to be a really slim UFA markets, and lots of teams with cap space, too. There's going to be a lot of silly contracts handed out this summer.

I think the Habs are going to swing a trade. I doubt they're going to go into the season with several million free on the cap, but there's almost nothing to spend their money on.

Not worth the money and contract length he was demanding.

His stats are inflated by the offensive teamates that are surrounding him.

Current UFA wingers still availible July 1

Top-6:
Cole
Jokinen
Gagne
Vrbata
Fleichmann
Leino

As far as the "is this guy definitely better than Kostitsyn" test goes, only Cole clearly passes. The others either had injury issues (Gagne, Fleichmann) or may have been riding better players coat-tails (Jokinen, Lieno) or just not better (Vrbata)

Top 9:
Ryder
Samsonov
Miettenien
Goc
Dupuis
Langenbrunner
Sturm
Higgins
Upshall
Kopecky
LaRose
Ward
Bergenhiem

For third line upgrades to play with Eller there are a few good names out there. Ideally the Habs would be looking for a two-way player with decent offense. From the list I like Miettenien, Goc, Dupuis, Higgins, Upshall and Ward for that role.

Unqualified UFA's:
Kennedy
Stewart
Bergfors
D'Agostini

All of these guys are worth a look, especially Kennedy.
