Draft 2011 goes down Friday night, June 24, 2011.

So stages the question...

What does GMSH and crew do in the first round???

Trade it or make a pick??? If you think they make a pick, who do you think CBJ take???

I'll admit it. If we have a new prospect when they call Boston to take the 9th pick, I'll be downright annoyed and will have to do my best to restrain myself.

I think back to the summer of '08 and the Vermette trade and remember that GMSH is capable of drastic changes that improve the team when needed, so I figure that, when sitting on a hot stove, he's quite likely to do something other than saying "The Columbus Blue Jackets select, from ______, (player name)".

I'm being optimistic. It may not be Jeff Carter, Brent Burns or Ales Hemsky - but in a year with a fairly weak draft in which we'll likely end up with a boom or bust prospect, I think Scott Howson will make a genuinely good attempt at improving this team immediately via trading our first round pick.

Make me an honest man, Scott.

Want: To take the pick
Think will happen: A trade that disappoints a lot of people but marginally improves the team.
Fear will happen: A trade that makes many happy until we realize how much we gave up for what little we got. An even more high profile Fedorov trade if you will.
Really Fear: Taking the pick, then dramatically overpaying in Free Agency.

It feels like tomorrow is a no win situation.

I'm a pessmist. I believe we over-value the #8 pick. I fear we will trade with Edmonton for Hemsky who will become our new Freddy Modin. We'd be better off picking Murphy and being patient. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow.

Howson and the Dispatch both has built up an expectation about trading this pick, the closet optimist in me says that we will get a good player that can help us next season with the trade, albeit I am preparing to say goodbye to a top flight prospect and most likely a young roster player from this system most likely because the 8th alone isn't going to get us a worldbeater.

I think the biggest letdown will be making the pick. Our offseason will be the draft, thats our best chance to acquire someone to help this team next season. I have a feeling UFA isn't going to be wowing anybody this offseason.

I think the pick will be traded for talent that will be of immediate help.

Pretty close to the same here. I fully expect to spend my weekend baking cookies with my grandmother and defending whatever non-Carter trade Howson makes. So it'll be a wash.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

I would really love to see a "improve now" trade... so that's where my heart for this team is.

Realistically??? I'm expecting to trade the pick for an additional pick in a later round and a roster player. I just hope its not a bust trade... so leave Hemsky where he is!!!

I really thing there is going to be a trade with Philadelphia. Reports are saying that they are wanting to sign Bryz to a 7 year, $7million/year deal. If that's the case and they are going to sign him before July 1 when he will be getting more offer sheets, Philly will HAVE to move some cap space.

Where's the option for "Make a trade only if the deal makes sense, take the pick if not"? I would have taken that option.

Is the poll question what we think should be done with the pick, or is the poll question what we think will actually happen Friday night with the 8th pick?

But all trades always make sense. If they don't make sense, you need to fire the front office. That's how sports works.

CBJ have traded Voracek, 1st and 3rd pick for (PHI) C Jeff Carter.

Guess the poll got its answer... :hand clap:

Thought I should post this, since Scott answered my request.

Thank you, Scott Howson. I, for one, do not think you over-paid for Jeff Carter by giving up an underachieving player and two picks from a fairly weak draft year.

Go Jackets in 2010-11!
