At the end of the day you can't plug a $7 mil per year contract into a 4th line center vacancy and expect to be a legit competitive team. Whatever intangibles Drury brings it's not enough in such a situation. His game just deteriorated and IMO it wasn't just injuries. $7 mil is way too much money to spend on a 4th line let alone one player. It's more money than should be spent on a third line. Last year the line of Boyle--500 k--Prust--800 k and Fedotenko--1 mil came in altogether at a very reasonably $2.3 mil--less than one third the cost of Drury. Those 3 all played well--Drury when he wasn't injured did not.
Whether or not the Rangers get Richards this Drury buyout needs to be done. If the Rangers don't get Richards they can try for one of the younger free agent d-men who can either add mean or pwp experience to the team and/or look at guys like Jokinen or Laich and/or they can try to deal for a guy like Stastny. There are options other than Richards.

No you're absolutely correct...but I think if you add them the minus outweigh his plus. And aside from Gaborik he has had much more success in his mid-level $ signings, IIRC aside from Gaborik in your list above most of those deals were pretty cap friendly...but my mind isn't what it used to be

If we bought him out, odds are not small that we would stand there looking at someone exactly like him this fall anyway. We got Frolov at first, then WW to replace Frolov. Two identical players almost. We knew what we got. But we got it because we didn't have any alternatives.
Also, I am not sure that WW could not be traded. If not for the whole x teams in 12 month thing, he still ought to have some value. He didn't suck for us, he just did not break out.
Well, the Rangers have almost a month to figure out contracts with Dubinsky and Callahan, even if they're nto done by then they will probably have an idea of where they'll end up (or a high range at least), and can know ho much cap space they have to sign someone like Richards, so they can decide on June 30th whether they need to buy out Wolski or wait and see if they "need" to buy him out in August
At the end of the day the reports are all the same really. He's done as a Ranger... Bought out? Maybe not but we won't be seeing him this season in Blue and we will have a new captain.
Quite honestly, would it shock anyone to hear that BR was willing to go to NY at the deadline to help his former team, kick the tires on NY BUT WITH EVERY INTENTION OF STILL HITTING UFA? If that's the case and even then wanted Tampa... He's giving a service for that trade and wouldn't feel pressure to sign anywhere. Makes complete sense to me why he would waive at the deadline for us but has Tampa as his fav now.

i think its more about whether or not a better option comes along between now and then...if a better lw becomes available via trade, buyout, not being qualified, etc then they could buyout wolski. but they don't want to buyout wolski and then not be able to replace him.

more importantly a similar player on a multi-year deal...a guy like jussi jokinen would be a slight upgrade but you'd probably have to commit the same $$ for 3-4 years. while wolski comes off the books at the end of the year when better options should be available.
Drury will have plenty of time to find a new team.
thats a silly comment by jesse. the buyout has to be done by june 30th. drury can't talk to team as a UFA until july 1st. so who cares. its not like if they buy him out today that he could sign with someone this weekend.

I'm not too versed on such contracts so can anyone put a list of players with 2-3 years remaining on current contracts with $6+ million/year and underperforming? Their current teams might seek "rejuvinated" Drury for leadership. And I'm aware that Drury has NMC that would require his
