Drury bought out

**UPDATE 2**

It appears as if the Rangers will be unable to buy out the final season of Chris Drury's contract because of a degenerative condition in the captain's left knee that apparently will render him medically unable to play next season, The Post has learned.

While Drury has yet to file the necessary paperwork, sources report he plans to do so. The Rangers, who had been planning a buyout, could file a grievance against Drury, but that is a remote possibility, at best.

Mounting a challenge is problematic on numerous levels, but winning a grievance would cost CEO Jim Dolan approximately $2.7 million in cash, given insurance ramifications.

This, of course, is bad news for Drury, who more than likely will be facing the end of a distinguished 12-year NHL career at the age of 35, which he turns in August.

the Daily News has learned the Rangers boss plans to buy out the final season of captain Chris Drury's five-year, $35.25 million contract.

"He's gone," the source said of Drury, who had one goal and four assists this season as he sat out 58 games with finger and knee injuries
Take with a grain of salt as it's a not worth a lot right now.

We do need a bass player. I'm sure he remembers how to play all the classics.

Knew this was going to be posted, already has been in the Free Agent topic...and the answer is the only reason I'd want him back is to replace Nieds and for the same price.

This but I'd probably go up to about $2m for him. He's better than Nieds and I think we could have a pretty damn good 3rd line with him at center. He had better offensive stats here than he ever had anywhere. I see no reason to think that his offensive numbers wouldn't be better here than when he was in NY. They won't be his 06-07 numbers that's for sure... but he can do good here for a couple of seasons and teach a hell of alot.

I would take Drury over Gaustad as our 3rd line center even when Drury is 45.

We need some guys on our roster who have done it before and were a huge reason why their team won. Playoff confidence, leadership. Its huge.

We get on Boyes for how bad he played in the playoffs, well when you have such little experience in the playoff why should we have expected more from Boyes? he didnt even know what to expect in the playoffs.

No no no no no no no.

Even before last year's injuries he was a liability. He was a defensive nightmare in 09-10. I've never seen an NHL player degrade as fast as Drury has in the past 2 years. It's almost NFL like.

Maybe as a 3a / 3b role. And absolutely nothing over two million.

I catch myself wondering how much of that is based on pure nostalgia, though. It's also worth noting that he missed a ****load of time last season.

Meh. The more I think about it the less I like it.

Here's my bottom 6.

Gerbe-Hecht-Boyes

No need for Drury to come back.

It would be kind of ironic to have him back this year for less than $2m, but other than that I don't want him. He's not the player he used to be and I can't really imagine the reception being good after the way he left.

I don't doubt that this is valuable, but it hardly stops time or turns back the clock. Drury did it before on a team where he played with superstars like Sakic and Forsberg, and it will be 11 years in the past by the time next season's playoffs roll around. The fact that he did it before hasn't made him any more effective for the Rangers.

Thinking his cup win negates his recent play, that he'll be worth $2 million, that he'll suddenly be effective again by virtue of playing for a team where he played well 4 years ago and before a serious injury...I think it's wishful thinking or nostalgia. I'd rather see the Sabres move forward than obsess over the past.

He wouldn't be a bad option for center depth and leadership, but obviously he could not be paid more than $2M per.

Drury as the 3rd line center?

He is no where near the player he was as a Sabre. He isn't likely to be the player he was 2 years ago. His play and ice time had already been dropping off before he started to have injuries this past season.

Its not really the cup Im talking about, Im talking about coming up big in the playoffs.

Im not confident in anyone on this team yet to pay the playoff price. Drury is not done. He had a couple tough years, I think he can play 14-15 minutes a game and still give us something, he wont be the 18-19 minute guy he was here.

Gaustad is our third line center IMO. I would slot Drury on the 4th line.

I'd gladly take him back for 1.5-2.0 for 1-2 yrs

We do need center depth badly. we could use an upgrade at defensive minded/faceoff winning/capable pking/veteran players.

Vanek-Richards-Stafford
Ennis-Roy-Pominville
Hecht-Drury-Gerbe
McCormick-Goose-Kaleta

He's not a fast, high energy forechecking center, and that's the only kind of player I want to add to the bottom six (that isn't a budding power forward like Kassian or Foligno).

And there it is.

I dont think anyone in the right mind wants Drury to play top 2 line minutes.

Yeah I just like the Gerbe-Gaustad line.

I think Gaustad got really motivated in the second half of last year and I want him to continue playing like that. I think playing with offensive, scrappy players inspired him for some reason. Or maybe it was just Gerbe, I don't know.

I guess I'm simply saying I liked 2011 Gaustad and want to see more of him.

Exactly. I don't want Drury for what he used to be. I'm willing to take a chance on him for what he is now. If the risk is low (1yr/1.5), I take the shot.
