Anyone think there's an actual chance if we somehow dump Gomez we'd get Talbot?

Boy, I'd love that...

Why don't we just sign Talbot and keep Gomez instead?

Nicklas Bergfors (and Steve Bernier) apparently will not be qualified by Florida (according to a Florida newspaper guy).

He was moved to wing by Atlanta but he's a guy who has been parts of lines that drive possession in fairly difficult situations, even though the point totals aren't exactly there. He would be a great 2nd/3rd line pickup. Hopefully Gauthier is in the bidding if Tallon doesn't come to his senses.

I can't say I think too highly of Bernier, but I could see Gauthier taking

Bergfors would be a good pickup for our second line. He fits in with our youth policy.

Pure speculation on my part, however

does anyone else think that we are still going to resign the wiz, like myself, or am I alone with this thought.

Obviously the deck is stacked against us but I have a feeling that we will be signing him, despite all of the issues with the cap, or at least make an effort too.

Here's why, the draft came and went and we didn't trade him, Gauthier has shown that if an assest has value but doesn't fit in with us anymore he will try to get assests back for them, see Bournival for O'Byrne, D'Agostini for Palushaj. As soon as Markov was signed, the day before the draft, the Wiz would've started being shopped to teams like detroit if he truly didn't have a spot on this roster? don't you think he would've tried to at least get a late round pick for him?

we have 14.8 million used on 16 players with

Cammalleri(6)-Plek(5)-xxxx
Gionta(5)-Gomez(7.3)-Maxpac(1.625)
Kostitsyn(3.25)-Eller(1.1)-Desharnais(.85)
Darche(.7)-xxxx-Moen(1.5)
xxxx

Markov(5.75)-xxxx
Subban(.875)-Gill(2.25)
Emelin(1)-xxxx
Spacek(3.833)

Price(2.75)
xxxx

So that leaves Gorges, White, Wiz, a bottom six center, a top six forward with size, and a backup

Gorges will probably end up resigning for 3.25
White probably .75
bottom six center 1
back up 1

that chews up 6 of the 14.8

leaving 8.8

if we could sign wiz for 5.25 that would leave us 3.5 for another forward

Regardless I still feel we need one more defenseman and another forward and I think we go over the top,

just htink

Markov-Gorges
Gill Subban
Emelin-another D for 4-5 mil puts us as one of the strongest defensive teams in the league and give us some backup if markov does go
down

especially with Price back there we could have a GAA around 2.2 with that kind of defense and goaltending

The alternative explanation is that everybody believes Wizniewski isn't signing a contract before July 1st so owning his rights for the next week is worth precisely nothing.

Yup, but he started out in Columbus. And they have a horrible record of developing talent(exceptions Nash and Brassard). Klesla was compared to Ray Bourque when he was drafted, but injuries, poor development and lost confidence have all contributed to a less than spectacular career. Put him on a third pairing with Weber and let him play a reduced role and see what he can do. Can't be any worse than Spacek can he??

Honestly, I'm not absolutely sure he's a definite 2nd-line guy and I wouldn't have him ahead of any of the Habs' wingers. I'd classify him as a 2nd/3rd-line guy right now and I want the Habs to sign two of those types to flank Eller and provide some much needed forward depth. With Wiz gone and the defense probably settled the Habs are going to have more money than they no what to do with this season.

Looks to me like he fits in about where he should be at this point... on the 3rd-line. Bergfors had pretty good even-strength production with fairly tough minutes and he didn't get to load up on PP time. Though I'd have Moen in the lineup ahead of White mind you (better defensively at even-strength and probably better on the penalty-kill).

I prefer dual offer-sheeting Voracek and Simmonds because it screws Philly and potentially gets you two quality young players for a few draft picks, but Bergfors would only cost you money at this point. I do predict Bergfors ends up with Detroit... but I predict all potentially under-valued forwards who are strong at even-strength end up in Detroit.

I took a magic pill and came up with this:

I would keep Pouliot as a wildcard. If he gets his act together...boy...it would be awesome the depth he would bring.

But if I need to make a change, then I would pursue Upshall to fit in Pouliot's place. Let's say for 2.8M$

This is a contender roster.

I would definitely try to sign Bergfors at a reasonable price, especially if we don't qualify Pouliot. He's still young and has a considerable amount of skill.

Because Raffi will likely be re-signed by Vancouver who badly needs his muscles along the boards.

As for Talbot, I would say at least half of the NHL team could make him an offer.

*Sign Richards if we can trade Gomez to Phoenix like it was been speculated
*Also, that would be our lineup until Eller comes back from his injury. Send Pyatt or White in the AHL when he is back.

That would be one hell of a team. The Kosty/Plek/Gionta line was electrying last year when put together. DD/Pac would be back together and Richards would have 2 good snipers to play with. That would be my ideal lineup of course.

What do you guys think?

My guess is that PG will kick the tires on Talbot and Gagne but they'll go elsewhere. I also think for a cheap price Kovalev may be brought back. Not sure if I like that, but it's an option. He still brings some skill and if determined, he could shine.

Also despite the stupidity he caused in the playoffs, Ben Eager for under a million may be OK.

We need to end up with two of the following, assuming we need to fill a top 6 spot, and a bottom 6 spot at forward (in no particular order /preference):

Top 6: Jagr, Laich, Upshall, Malone (trade rumors floating), Gagne, Cole, J. Jokinen,

Bottom 6: Talbot, Rupp, Konopka, Langenbrunner, LaRose, Ward, Torres, Kopecky

The defensive corps also needs to be settled. As of now, we have 5 D men under contract in Markov, Subban, Gill, Spacek, and Emelin. That leaves one spot in 6 man rotation, assuming Emelin starts up with the big club.

The battle wages between: Gorges, Hamrlik, Wisniewski, Weber

Can we afford to let any of the above mentioned D-men walk???? I like all of them and wish we could keep them all. I really hope we keep Wiz and Gorges. Hammer would be a nice insurance policy however if he came cheap. Weber has potential, but is replaceable in my opinion. We could get some value for him in a trade.

Why anyone would want Ben Eager is beyond me.

Sum of last season: gave up a powerplay during which the team conceded four goals, got suspended for four games and team traded him because they were fed up of him. Got to conference finals with new team, took a ridiculous string of penalties in game two, left out of rest of series.

Is this really a player who you see Jacques Martin tolerating. Plus the guys 27, it's unlikely he's going to suddenly mature.
