Guys who made the come back? Don't know how old Mario was but he did it and they're around the same talent level. I do however see plenty of players who never stopped playing hockey who still are competitively such as Recchi. I don't see why a more talented younger version of him would fail. Maybe if he was small and lost a ton of his speed but Jagr was never small and he most certainly wasn't known for his speed. He was known for his high end skill level.
Well every player has a price. I wouldn't mind Kovalev for 1M, or Jagr for 2.5M, but would they accept those offers? Would they accept 1year deals? I am all for getting Jagr if it only costs us Pyatt+Pouliot (salary wise) and 1-2 mil extra on the cap. I'd still rather have Wisniewski than Jagr, even after the 2-3M salary difference. Powerplay and rushes is our bread and butter, and it all starts at the D. Markov, Subban and Wis offer great offensive support and an above average 2nd PP point man.

I also don't know how well Jagr would fit in a defense-first system.

Wis to Detroit does seem plausible, but come on, Montreal is much nicer than Detroit, that has to have an impact...right?

Those are 3 pretty solid duo's we have right now. Throw in Pacioretty with Gomez/Gionta, and perhaps Pouliot with Eller/Kostitsyn.

We are still looking at a glaring need for a top 6 forward. If we want to contend, the days of Moen/Darche in the top 6 need to be over with.

Gagne, Laich, Leino. Cole...is there really anyone of any value out there?

If not, I say we use that money to re-sign Wiz and make a trade to acquire a top 6 forward.
I would love to have Leino. It might be possible if PHI inks Bryzgalov.

If the NY Rangers lose out on Brad Richards, it would not surprise me in the least to see them make a hard run at Markov. And Sather has no trouble spending money, just ask Drury, Redden or Gomez.

I'm pretty sure Red Wings are losing both Lidstrom and Rafalski due to retirement, so Wiz would pretty much take Rafalski's spot as a right handed defenseman in the line-up. If I'd be Detroit, it would be automatic. I've said it many times before, I like him and what he brings to the table, but at what price?

I really like Wiz, but I have to agree that he most likely won't be back. The main reason is that I think that he will test the market and go to the team that offers the most secure term. The guy's been on 4 teams in a few years and has set himself up for a nice contract with a great year.

I also think that a couple of the bigger name guys will go off the market before July 1st (I just can't see Ehrhoff and Pitkanen making it there). If that happens, I think people will be surprised by the cap hit Wiz garners.

In any case, take the Jagr money and make a push for Leino. The Flyers can't keep them all!
Beliveau retired at 40 after leading the Habs to Stanley Cup glory,he finished the season with a team leading 76 points 25 goals.Finishing with 507 goals including a hattrick the night he broke 500.Probably could have played another five years productively.Jaromir is still healthy as was Beliveau and is completely able to play at a high level in the NHL.

That fact that you have to go back to 1941 to find an example is scary

For next seasons forward lineup I think Desharnais may be converted to a LW, so the 4 spots could be Cammalleri, Pacioretty, Desharnais, and Moen. Down the middle is Plekanec, Gomez, and Eller. They needs a 4th line center. I think they may leave the spot open for Engqvist. RH center, good in the circle and can kill penalties. Has size though he is not the tough physical player most fans will want for the Habs. If its not him, than the Habs may re-sign Halpern or sign Boyd Gordon to a 1 year contract. Right now down the right side is Kostitsyn, Gionta, Darche, and White. White is an RFA but I think he'll be signed to play 4th line RW and bring energy to the team. I would like to see Darche as an extra forward, because he can play either wing and is a good veteran that don't complain when having to sit in the pressbox, and there will be injuries for him to fill in for. But with his play last year I doubt they don't have him penciled in the top 12. If he is an extra forward, I would like to see the Habs to go after Vrbata to play with Cammy and Plek's, and move Kostitsyn to Ellers wing. Or keep Kostitsyn with Cammy and Plek's, and go after a veteran like Langenbrunner or Miettinen for third line RW. For the last extra forward spot, I would like the Habs to get a tough guy, such as Eager, Winchester, or Godard. Three of them could come pretty cheap. Unfortunately in this situation I see both Pouliot and Pyatt moved.

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Kostitsyn
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Desharnais - Eller - Darche
Moen - Engqvist - White
extra: Eager/Winchester/Godard

Potentially having Vrbata play Plek's wing, he is a guy you can reasonably expect about 20 goals and 30 assists on the season. Pushes down Kostitsyn to play on Eller's wing and Darche as an extra with one of the tough guys signed. Or one of Langenbrunner or Miettinen signing to play Eller's RW and move Darche as an extra. But more than likely we will see the top 12 I have posted with both Pouliot and Pyatt as the extras.

Talbot-Eller-Kostitsyn
Moen-Deharnais-White

Darche

Markov-Gorges
Subban-Gill
Spacek-Yemelin

I like this line up but I really hope PG can trade Spacek and upgrade the defense

The question I would ask if I was PG is, would I trade Spacek and a pick/prospect for Wiz? I think the answer is yes, so why not trade Spacek + so that we can keep Wiz and have a very formidible defense next year?

The cost diference woundl't be more than $2M and we'd still have enough money for a top 6 guy that we need.

Cammy Plex ?
Max Gomez Gio
AK Eller Moen
Darche White Deharnais/Pyatt

Markov Gorges
Wiz Emelin
Gill PK
Weber

We are already pretty much guaranteed this roster, which looks competitive as it is. Toughness would be nice and it is possible to get. Signing a guy like Konopka, McCormick and a top 6 go to the net kinda guy and we have a very good forward corps.

Cammy Pleks Laich
Patches Gomez Gionta
Desharnais Eller Kostitsyn
Moen McCormick White
Darche

Three possible scoring lines and one intimidating/energy line. I'm sold.

Don't think Montreal will bring in a ufa 4th liner unless its a player they really want. Seems like Management likes Enqgvist's game this year in the playoffs. He should get a real good shot to take the 4th line center duties.

With Laich and Gagne, how can we sign Subban and Price next year?

Really? Gorges 1,5M? Weber 1,1? Gorges will get 2,5-2,75, Weber a one-way deal less than 1M.

And btw, I doubt Emelin will be paired with Markov. I dont know why you guys are so pumped with him...on hockey future, he has a 6,0D grade. Can someone tell me why lots of you are excited by Emelin and are expecting him to play on the first pairing?

1.5 M for Gorges is what I think his salary will be for next year, will it increase in the upcoming years? most likely! Even if he has 2 or 2.5 cap hit we are still under a 63M Cap so we are good.

For Emelin and Markov, i'm not saying they will play together all season long. D pairings change all year long. It might be a good way to ease him in to play with someone that speak russian...

Emelin had a 7.0 D in 2009. A 7.5B in 2007. His ranking continuously slides down because they never thought he would come over to North America. Also it makes sense to pair him with Markov to start because he doesn't know English.

In the current goalie market, I sincerely doubt an RFA like price makes more than 4.5 even if he's a Vezina candidate. GM's have adjusted to the market so contracts like Ward's and Fleury's are no longer comparable. Consider that Thomas got 5.5 as a UFA after winning a Vezina.

Unless Carey totally craps out this upcoming season, there is no way he takes less 5 per on a multi-year deal. If they qualify him and he ends up only getting a deal for one year and say 3 mill, it will be his last season with us. Thomas is older and got his max payday from Boston, Price is still has his best years coming up, he'll cost at least 5 million a year.

I posted this lineup not too long ago in the old thread:

Cammalleri(6)-Plekanec(5)-Kostitsyn(3.25)
Pacioretty(1.5)-Gomez(7.357)-Gionta(5)
Desharnais(0.85)-Eller(1.27)-Darche(0.7)
Moen(1.5)-Pyatt(0.5)-White(0.5)/Pouliot(1.35)

Markov(5.75)-Wiz(5)
Gorges(2.5)-Subban(0.85)
Yemelin(0.95)-Spacek(3.83)
Weber(0.7)

Price(2.75)
UFA backup(1)

Total Cap hit of $58 600 000 with the Laraque buyout

I felt that this would be the most realistic outcome because I didn't anticipate Gauthier making any major changes. Gill has been resigned, making it difficult now to insert Wiz in the lineup, unfortunately.

I can understand that some people would like to sign Laich because of his size, but he's a LW/C, and we are loaded at LW with Cammalleri & Pacioretty and possibly Desharnais. (I don't think Laich would be a good fit) Ideally we would have to sign a solid RW for more offensive depth. Personally I would look into Jagr (high risk/high reward), or Leino (could be a good fit, he a good playmaker that could complement scorers like Cammalleri & Plekanec). As long as Gomez is in our top 6, we will continue to struggle offensively. It would be nice if we could find a taker for him, but we all know that's highly unlikely at his salary. Therefore, before converting Desharnais to a LW, I would give him the chance as the team's 2nd line center. I truly believe he has the vision & talent to succeed at that position. I think he can do much better than what Gomez did this season. At the beginning of the season, I would like to see this lineup:

Cammalleri-Plekanec- UFA (Jagr,Leino)
Pacioretty-Desharnais-Gionta
Kostitsyn-Gomez-Darche
Moen-Eller-White

Markov-Subban
Gill-Gorges
Spacek-Weber
Yemelin

Price

If we can find a way to sign Wiz, Bieska or Brewer, I think this would be a boss lineup!
