John Madden to return to Hawks?

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/John-...turn/128/36290

Would not mind him back to fill a C position.

Worried about age and fatigue. He was barely a #4 center by the playoffs, we need a bona fide shutdown #3. Unless we decide that's Bolland, in which case we need a strong and versatile #2. Unless we decide that's Sharp, in which case we need a #1LW.

This was mentioned in another thread, but we can make this the "Madden talk" thread. If he's cheap, it can't hurt.

Yeah, heard about that rumor on the Afternoon Saloon on ESPN1000 earlier today. If it's on the cheap, he could definitely make for a good addition to our depth.

He played well in the few Minnesota games I watched this season. Would love to have him back.

Picking up Mad-Dog as our 4th line center would be huge! Not only for the locker room, but as far as getting another 2 way player, a player who's good at the dot and on the PK.

He would be a great pickup for the right price.

I would love to have both Madden and Johnson here next year. This would really take some defensive load off of Toews for faceoffs and PK, and Toews could take any offensive zone faceoffs and focus more on his offensive game and the PP.

Sharp/Toews/Kane
Brouwer/Bolland/Hossa
Bickell/Kruger?/Frolik
Burish/Johnson/Madden

Even better, take a bullet and trade Campbell for whatever, and sign Richards as the second line center and keep Bolland on the third. I'm tired of us having to put guys that "can play center" (Frolik, Sharp, etc.) as centers instead of putting guys that are actually good centers at center.

Madden looked tired by the end of our cup run, but he looked pretty peppy and was very effective last year in Minny.

The thing is, if we do trade Campbell, it won't be for nothing. Another team will unload one of their bad contracts on us. If it was Toronto, we'd be getting Komisarek or Phaneuf for example.

I feel like a lot of people don't give him a lot of credit. I could almost say he was second in importance of the people who left next to Ladd. He's a great faceoff guy and is pretty solid even at his age. Upgrade over Johnson or Dowell IMO

I could argue either side of Johnson vs Madden at this point in their careers. I think they both have their strengths. I would just love to see us sign both of them. I think our center depth has been a problem for a long time. Why not bring on both of these guys, even if you have to play one on the wing? Why let some wing-only scrub play on the fourth line when you could pay a few hundred k more and have Madden or Johnson on the wing instead? Why not back up the truck and load up on the quality centers?

I think if Bowman makes the right moves, we can be a cup favorite next year. I am just not sure he has it in him. I hope I am wrong.

He was the best faceoff guy in the league last year. He is very good on the PK. He has more offensive ability than most 4th liners. He plays an overall smart game. Not sure what there is not to like for a guy making close to minimum wage.

Johnson can put himself into position to score because he's a pretty smart hockey player, he just doesn't have the skill to finish. He's a willing shot blocker, great at the dot and plays pretty smart. I have no problem with keeping him if he's making close to the min

this guy can't skate
can't shoot
has no offensiv instincs

all he can is win faceoffs and block a shot. He isn't really good at the PK, he is a good option.

I think you're talking about a different Ryan Johnson.

I don't know all about that.... The guy is certainly fantastic in the circle, and is a good locker room guy - however offensive ability is not his strong point.
