So it wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me, thank God.

K. Carrera praised him in her article, BB liked him as well, so it looks like he will be the first in line for that position (whatever it is).

I'd almost forgotten about Kugryshev. That guy has everything to prove this year.

I think a lot of people have after last year. Flashes of great skill, but very few and far between.

Look, I'm a huge fan of what MoJo accomplished last year, and I think he will only get better. But rolling with 2C MoJo and 3C Eakin/Sjogren full time is not a recipe for success IMO. I'm excited to see what Eakin and Sjogren can do, but this team made moves in the off-season with the interest of winning now. I think something like this forward line-up gives us the best chance:

Ovi - Backstrom - Brouwer (Knuble's the man, but I want to see what this young line could do)
Semin - MoJo - Knuble
Sjogren/Eakin - Laich - Ward
Chimera - Halpern - Hendricks
Beagle
King

I'd be much more comfortable having Sjogren/Eakin at wing with Laich at center, fulfilling those defensive responsibilities. I think counting on a line of Ward - Eakin/Sjogren - Brouwer would be disastrous. Ward and Brouwer are great at what they do, grinding and hitting, but neither are great defensive players. Depending on a rookie to cover for them would be a mistake.

Edit - by disastrous, I mean if always used. Obviously that would be an incredible forechecking line.
I would like to see this line. That is a lot of hitting, open ice and opponents worrying whether Ovy or Brouwer devastates them.

My biggest issue is Eakin wearing 50. How does a shifty forward justify wearing a number in the 50's? 1-29 or 80-99. Come on man, this is serious stuff.

Well, both him and Bouchard will have better linemates, correct? Although, there have been so many signings of tweeners like Bourque and Potulny that I wonder if they'll get much playing time.

Yeah, to young. As a CHL player under 20 he has to either make the roster for the Caps or be sent back to the CHL. As it stands the AHL is not an option. I got confused to when I first heard that he was to young for the AHL.

Will he still be eligible to play for St John in January when he turns 20 or is that when he would have to move? Thanks for the information.

Yes. The age rules for both the CHL and AHL are based on the players' age at the beginning of the season.

I am thinking about heading over for the scribbage tomorrow. I always miss the puck drop somehow so I will try and be early this year.

This article might better explain it.

Quote:
The NHL/CHL agreement states that a player with junior eligibility signed by an NHL team must be returned to his junior team if he's not playing in the NHL. It's part of a deal that provides CHL money for players produced (sort of like the IIHF agreement between the NHL and European countries). The NHL agrees to send the teenagers back because CHL needs these players - its top players -- to make money. If the CHL didn't make money, they couldn't produce players. You scratch my back, I scratch yours.

Specifically, the rule says that if a player played in junior before they were drafted by the NHL, then they have to either be 20 years old by Dec. 31 OR have played four years of junior in order to play in the minors . That second condition rarely comes into effect. It would only apply to players who began in the CHL at age 15.
Either way this upcoming season will be his fourth year of junior and he'll be 20 on 1/17 next year so either condition would grant him AHL eligibility.

They're based on their age at the end of the calendar year, not the beginning of the season.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that prospects don't get to pick their number. It's just handed to them.

Bouchard is in the same boat as Bourque and Potulny, career AHL'ers. There has been so much turnover unlike the last two years and I really haven't keep up with potential Bear lines. (Job hunting is a full time job itself and top that with having 2 month left at my current job teaching people my daily ****. ) Off the top of my head though there should be some room on the second line.

The Matt Ford signing was bad news for Kugryshev. I don't think he cracks their top nine forwards when healthy, assuming everyone clears on the way down. He'd be better off in South Carolina vs. being a fourth-liner rotation type...but then Orlov wouldn't have a translator.

Mystery coach revealed:

SWhyno: Just had great chat with Kitchener Rangers coach Steve Spott who's at #Caps development camp. Expects Landeskog in Colo. next year for sure.

With a shot like that, he'd fit in perfectly.

oops, sorry, I guess I forgot to post here when I found out Monday night (I posted it elsewhere.)

As to Hershey, I'll wait and see, but I am not surprised they are going to make Kugryshev earn his ice time.

For Hershey: Aucoin, Potulny, Bourque, Ford, Greentree, Hanson, etc., on 2-way contracts and Bouchard and Perreault if/when they sign their QOs. As to the Hershey, non NHL contract forward signings known to date:

- Andrew Carroll, C
- David de Kastrozza, W
- Boyd Kane, LW
- Maxime Lacroix, W

plus 4 dmen:
- Paul Baier, D
- Julien Brouillette, D
- Phil Oreskovic, D
- Patrick Wellar, D

UPDATE: Add Mink to that Hershey list now, too

Ha, I have no allegiances...actually I just looked and I did post it here

Missing the scrimmage today, not pleased

One random note, there are a bunch of teammates at this camp, just dawned on me this morning that 2 of them, Lockhart and Elliot from Seattle Thunderbirds, will be coached by Konowalchuk next year in the WHL.
