He's got more psycho, though. So there's that.

It seemed like George talked up Brooks at C an awful lot though and Sjogren isn't exactly a proven commodity. Heck, if its an open competition for that spot and Bruce isn't sold on Brooks there then I wouldn't be surprised to see Halpern win the #3 C over Sjogren. I don't really know much about him at this point though. What are the impressions of him in the scrimmages thus far? Obviously big and physical which is good and sounds like he's doing well in the dot thus far.

Jeff Halpern is a 20 point player at this stage in his career and he is fragile as all hell. I know our center depth is putrid, but if he's playing 3c, we're in trouble.

I agree. To come out and declare yourself a dirty player, well to me it sounds like a 5 minute major and game misconduct waiting to happen. Funny, people go nuts over Semin's stick penalties then another guy basically beats his chest talking about how he's basically willing to take cheap shots and he gets praised.

I don't want to and have no intention of defending a possible Cooke like player, even if he's wearing Red.

Quote:
“I know it’s a blind side, but if it’s a hit, it’s a hit. I’m a pretty dirty player…like [Pittsburgh’s] Matt Cooke,” Paquette said. “So I did my job. Usually people come at me and try to fight, but no one came, so it’s OK.”
He's even dumb enough to compare himself to Cooke. Please get this guy out of here.

SDR's hockey skills resulted in an epic 16 point season in 67 AHL games + a pointless 7-game NHL stint.

I like the kid, but his hockey skills were always a bit over-stated. Even Matt Bradley was a 20/20 guy in his first AHL season.

This is kind of funny, the person I was standing/sitting next to talked about how he thought Paquette seemed like a Cooke-type cheap shot artist. I agree I don't like that.

I'm not sure of SDR's OHL numbers off the top of my head, but Bradley's Jr. years were pretty good point wise.

Edit: Bradley: 155pts in 175 games. SDR: 138pts in 230 games.

Agreed- that's why I think unless Sjogren really impresses Brooks has to play at least the #3 C. I guess if its really open for competition and Bruce doesn't want Brooks there then Eakin has a shot too- I tend to think they're competing for the #4 C spot though- at least for now.

Last season, Halpern played 72 games and scored 26 points.

The year before that, Halpern played 71 games and scored 19 points between the Lightning and the Kings.

So, I don't think he's as fragile as people think since he recovered from the injury. Also, he probably would've scored over 20 points two seasons ago if he had played 82 games, and he scored more than 20 points last year.

Having said all that, I agree that long term over the course of the season that Halpern should be 4th line center, not the 3rd line center.

Taylor went off the ice yesterday injured, and I did not see him either so he is likely still injured.

Even though he didn't score, I love Orlov's move in the shootout. Silky smooth. Kid has some serious hands.

Paquette beat the snot out of whoever he fought yesterday....the vid is up on the RMNB blog.

Matt Cooke, while not a popular man to compare himself to is actually a decent hockey player when you look past all the suspensions. Having a guy who plays on the edge isn't always a bad thing. Pacquette is doing all he can to make an impression and he's doing it. I'm not mad at the kid due to how he's playing (scored a goal yesterday as well) or with the comparison he made. He'll turn himself into a player that can agitate and get others off their games. He's a guy I'll be keeping an eye on to see if he can crack this roster in a few seasons.

Just saw the video of Paquette's hit - didn't look dirty? Maybe it's the angle and the speed and I'm missing something?

He caught him in a vulnerable position I guess but it wasn't a Rule 48 sort of hit. I thought he got chest before anything else on the follow through.

NBC Washington bleeped out shift in shift disturber from his interview.

After seeing the actual interview w. Paquette, the media REALLY took his comment out of context. You can clearly see he was joking around.

*FWIW, I loved watching the clips of him. Hope he keeps it up.
