I think that Republic is not a bad name though I don't know how well it lends itself to a logo.

The Regiment is a favourite of mine and I think that logo and merchandising opportunities abound with it.

The Caps is, admittedly, my least favourite. Apart from the similarity to the Washington nickname, I just don't like it.

I'd also be partial to Vikings.

Would be interesting to see if Vancouver Whitecaps FC have something to say about that.

if an ahl team can call themselves the admirals after another team in the league has the same name, I'm pretty sure an ahl team can use the same name as a team from a whole different sport. Whitecaps fits perfectly. It refers to the rough Newfoundland waters covering the entire island and it also keeps the history of the St. John's Caps.

Watching the National news last night considering the 58 Km long island of ice (described as the size of Bermuda) approaching Labrador from last summers glacier break off in Greenland..........
How about the St John's Ice or due to the good viewing of them in NL Icebergs.
Anybody know when King Danny will announce the name?.....humour not a political statement
Naturally I hope no travelling fans end up in Saint John and have to watch the Memorial Cup Champion Sea Dogs instead of their home town AHL team.................but it'll happen and we Atlantic's will have a good chuckle...lol

Ice is a bit generic for a team name (coming from a person that went to about a dozen or so Indiana Ice USHL games when I lived in Indiana!), but the Icebergs isn't that bad of an idea, to be honest.

Any idea when the team's actually going to make an official announcement?

RUMOR: St. John's Hockey Team Has a Name

"CBC News has learned there are strong signs that the province's new AHL franchise will be called the St. John's Ice Caps."

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...9.html?ref=rss

I like it but this comes to mind. I know its not Iced Cap, but when I say Iced cap it sounds like ice cap.

Might want to add a rumor tag to the topic title until it gets confirmed.

@CochraneCBCNL says there's actually a series of domain names registered. This is just one of them

The local newspaper has reported that the Ice Caps is a domain that has been registered by an advertising agency that has been doing work with the team. They have also registered other domains including stjohnsvikings.com

Edit: The ad agency has only registered stjohnsicecaps.com, all the others have been registered by individuals. Moreover, St. John's Ice Caps Inc. registered at our Registry of Companies, with Danny Williams as the sole shareholder, so that seems to tell the tale. Ice Caps it sure seems to be.

Yes that does seem to lock the name up. Of course, that company could also change its mind.

No name in any poll would be favored by a majority. In every case of a new team and a new team name, the vast majority don't like the name as they had another favorite name. As I recall the CHL Missouri Mavericks received over 5k suggestions with over 2k different names... Of the five selected for the final poll, none got more than thirty percent..

While that poll may have not been all that close, there wasn't a landslide either. All that counts is a name, it doesn't matter which one. Whether its the Ice Caps, Moose, Jets, or Bluenose, any name will do...

I suggested the Bumbles, but I am sure there was a copyright on that name.... But I am sure the Bumble would make a nice mascot for the Ice Caps....

Wow so the team will be a laughing stock before they even hit the ice...Ice Caps? Brought to you by Tim Hortons, yeah that will certainly strike fear into the opposition...Team management must be aware of this, really anything but this would be better.

Ice Caps makes us seem like a really cold place...despite the fact that our lowest temperatures are about -10 C.

You think its funny, but its true. When the temperature hits 20 C the people disappear into the malls, big box stores and basements to get out of the heat. The forecast calls for 23 tomorrow where I live (I work outside with minor baseball) so we spent today preparing for tomorrow, getting coolers with ice, creating shade around dugouts etc... Its going to be brutal.
