St. John's Hockey Club will not be the Moose

Manitoba Moose name ditched: Moniker not so cute with deadly experience

Well, either something has changed, or Winnipeg’s team has a name. Mark Chipman said a few days or weeks ago that the name Moose would remain somewhere within the organisation. Now Danny Williams has said that the AHL team won’t be the Moose.

I thought this was basically old news. We will see but I think Moose is the very last thing the new team will be called. It combines the backlash of not using Jets (not to mention extra backlash at the minor league notion it invokes) and gives none of the merchandising advantages of using a completely new name. It's a worst case scenario from a business perspective so it makes no sense from my point of view.

Manitoba Moose is the one name that would piss me off most. It's polling at at what... 4-5% support compared to 70+ % for the Jets? Falcons & "Other" are more popular choices.

The Moose & the IHL belong together... dead and buried.

Moose would be the worst way to go for this new team.

Uh.... I'm fine with them renaming the team when they move to St. John's, but because of "negative connotations?" Please, that's just lame. I'm sure that there are plenty of moose collisions in Manitoba, too.

Just be honest and say that you're not interested in keeping the Moose name, don't say it's because of "negative connotations."

Sigh, yep, it's going to be the Manitoba Moose. With such amazing support for the name here in Winnipeg, how could they not name them the Moose?

Of course, does Manitoba have a class-action suit filed against the province on behalf of all of those affected by moose collisions?! I think it might be fair to say there are 'negative connotations' in Newoundland, lol.

The Moose could probably be the name of the ECHL team, as the Gwinnett Gladiators are dropping their affiliation.

Probably best to stay away from famous player's nicknames as team names.

heh, I'm pretty sure that there are more than a few class action lawsuits ongoing against the oil industry, is the Oilers name in jeopardy? I think that the San Diego Padres are fine too, even with the recent sex scandal in the Church.

Then again, I wouldn't expect a Great Lakes based team to go by the name "Carp" anytime soon, so what do I know?

Calling them the moose would be an insult frankly.

Hey man,

Every day here we hear about someone else dying because of a moose accident. Every day.

Please think before you open your mouth (type an opinion).

What the hell are you talking about? How did his post warrant such a response?

Any of these would make a fine name for Winnipeg's AHL franchise.

Yeah, read what I typed again and tell me where I made jokes about people dying. Overreact much.

Wow. How dare the moose stand in front of someone's speeding car? Evil animals.
