I agree with going boom or bust.

I just don't see many of the players available to us here booming into the elite talent we need. My ideal draft would be packaging the first for proven talent.

So, here's my mock for the first round, barring any trades (although I'll outline a couple that I could see happening at the end).

1) EDM - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2) COL - Jonathan Huberdeau
3) FLA - Gabriel Landeskog
4) NJD - Adam Larsson
5) NYI - Dougie Hamilton
6) OTT - Ryan Strome
7) WPG - Sean Coutourier
8) CBJ - Ryan Murphy
9) BOS - Mika Zibanejad
10) MIN - Mark Scheifele
11) COL - Oscar Klefbom
12) CAR - Joel Armia
13) CGY - Mark McNeill
14) DAL - Jamieson Oleksiak
15) NYR - Jonathan Miller
16) BUF - Nathan Beaulieu
17) MTL - Tyler Biggs
18) CHI - Sven Bartschi
19) EDM - Joe Morrow
20) PHX - Nicklas Jensen
21) OTT - Brandon Saad
22) ANA - Duncan Siemens
23) PIT - Alexander Khokhlachev
24) DET - Jonas Brodin
25) TOR - Matt Puempel
26) WSH - Rocco Grimaldi
27) TBL - Scott Mayfield
28) SJS - Ty Rattie
29) VAN - Connor Murphy
30) TOR - Zach Phillips

Possible trades:

- I could see the Avalanche selecting Larsson at #2, and then, if Klefbom is still available at #11, they draft him, and then trade Larsson to one of the teams that picked in the 3-5 range (like NJ), in exchange for the player they selected and an extra pick/roster player/prospect.

- Columbus could potentially move down if they feel like Murphy will drop.

- I could see the Rangers move, whether up or down, depending on the availability of a prospect they like.

- Ottawa might try to move up from 21.

- I could see the Isles picking Zibanejad at 5.

Has a trade like that ever happened in the NHL? I know it happens all the time in the NBA. In the NFL, only the Manning trade comes to mind.

People saying the Biggs will not turn into Lucic, yet claim that Grimaldi will turn into MSL or Gerbe...that just seems odd to me.
I don't think anyone is saying that at all. It's simply that Grimaldi has a much higher upside. Yes, Biggs is more likely than Grimaldi to be an effective NHL player, but I don't necessarily think that Biggs is more likely to become Lucic than Grimaldi is to become MSL.

Really, it's just a matter of getting a safe player vs taking a chance on a boom/bust player. With the depth that we have in our prospect pool, I'm willing to take a chance on a boom/bust.

I had that thought briefly, but in several recent drafts Gordie has talked about our guy falling to us. Dunno how accurate that is, but I was sure they were getting ready to rock the "We cannot BELIEVE this guy fell to us!" routine.

A question for all of you. If Murphy were to fall, as did Fowler, and we take Murphy, do you see that as the end for MDZ as a Ranger? I personally like Murphy more than DZ.

Del Zotto put up 9 goals and 37 points in his rookie year in the NHL. Unless Murphy comes in and does better than that, he won't make Del Zotto expendable.

You're allowed to have more than one puck mover.

Obviously lol, but we also need forward depth. Many say move Girardi, but if Murphy could take DZ's spot, why not trade DZ for a forward? Girardi's don't come around too often.

Yeah why is everyone so eager to get rid of MDZ? He's a different breed then these guys. His offensive game probably has a little less potential than a guy like Fowler but he's so much more grittier and physical. I'd take both of them, IF they had legitimate d-partners so their lack of defensive skill doesn't kill us.

Murphy is a righty, so he likely would not be competing with MDZ for ice time, unless the Rangers go with 2 lefties on their 3rd pair this year. Otherwise, in theory he would actually be a compliment to MDZ/Erixon/<insert lefty here> on the PP.

Perhaps Murphy could take MDZ's spot (assuming MDZ has a spot to take), but when? I doubt it would be this year. If scouts thought Murphy was NHL ready I'd imagine he would never get to us.

Murphy met with the Bruins Monday in Boston

Bruins have #9

Boston needs some young legs on D. Perfect fit with that name.

It's pretty clear Boston wants Murphy, but I think Columbus takes him @ 8.

Let me rephrase. We all thought it was a lock at that point with Fowler, Gormley, and TArasenko still on the board that one of those three would have been taken.

My guesses:

50% Biggs
25% McNeill
25% Everyone Else

Wait, we're drafting this guy?

He folds in the playoffs. Everyone knows that.

I've said it many times in this thread, I haven't seen many of these players play. However, judging by our draft position and after reading guides and after watching the live Q&A today, I think we will draft and I will be satisfied with Mark McNeill or Tyler Biggs.

A nice Q and A (text, not video) with Tyler Biggs. Seems like a good kid that's willing to work.

Quote:
A lot of players like to trash talk on the ice. What is the funniest chirp you’ve heard while playing?

Tyler: The funniest chirp I have ever heard would have to be when someone told my teammate to come on the ice to fight him he replied, “I would, but I never see you because I get a regular shift!”

Quote:
Favorite movies?

Tyler: My favorite movies would have to be Youngblood by far, then Green Street Hooligans, Rocky 4, and Miracle.
He likes Green Street Hooligans, sign him up for the Rangers!

There are five forwards I like - Biggs, McNeill, Saad, Miller and Rattie.

I love Biggs energy and willingness, I just can't see him as a higher scorer. So in that sense he's another tweener. I worry that his energy makes him an easy guy to over-Project, but also worry that he ends up becoming the type of player every team wants. .

McNeill is probably the best overall player of the bunch, but he needs to put it all together more consistently. He reminds me a lot of Ryan Getzlaf at the same age.

Saad has the most pure talent of this group, but he just didn't wow me the way I thought he would. He could be a guy you look back and regret not giving the benefit of the doubt.

Miller is probably the biggest wild card of the bunch. His skill level is probably between Biggs and McNeill, but it remains to be seen if he is going to trend up offensively or settle into more of a nice bottom six prospect.

Rattie is a pure offensive player who is a little easy to overlook because he isn't big, or a banger. Having said that, he could easily develop into an NHL scoring winger and make some players drafted in front of him look very silly.

Push comes to shove, McNeill would be my guy.
