From a Phoenix standpoint, all signs point to him not re-signing. I imagine he may end up on a team who needs some solid veteran leadership.

Still a really good defenseman, but he has a few significant flaws. I will miss him.

if the Flames move Regehr or Bouwmeester, I could definitely see him signing in Calgary.

Is that why Eklund is saying that Bouwmeester is going to Ottawa

If they could get him on a reasonable 2 year deal I would like him on the Caps. The defense here is young and in need of a veteran leader. I doubt it will happen though (Hannan will probably be brought back instead).

I'm going with Detroit as where he'll actually wind up.

I actually am holding out hope Colorado will sign him, and stick him on Johnson's pairing. With our defense currently being Johnson, Liles, Wilson, Cumiskey, Holos, Hunwick, O'Byrne, and Quincey, Liles is the grizzled old veteran of the bunch...at age 30. We need some kind of leadership, and some size with our smurfish blue line could only help.

One year deal, overpay a bit? 4 or 4.5? Doubtful, but I can dream.

Logical choices would be:

Detroit, Vancouver, San Jose, St. Louis, and maybe Dallas or Florida.

He's still a solid top-4 defenseman -- he had a bad year offensively last year, and he has had his injury troubles the past few seasons, but he can still contribute positively to a team's defense, and add a solid veteran presence in the locker room.

For the record -- the contract he signs will be a 35+ contract -- anyone who signs him should proceed with caution.

and the reason he won't be re-signed is he is asking too much

Can you share some of his flaws?

The player I've known him to be seems like a good fit for Buffalo on a 2-year contract. However, he's regressed. He's not worth $6.5M anymore, not even close to being worth that. Washington also seems like a good destination. Detroit wouldn't surprise me a bit either.

#1, He is extremely gaff prone. He's always had this issue but when his offensive numbers aren't at his former All star caliber levels they are much more noticeable.

#2. Does not bring a consistent physical game. When he is physical he's effective at it but I wouldn't count on it every night.

#3. Not ideal on the PK. I would look to my bottom 3 D to be decent PK'ers but Jovo really isn't. He is passable but his positioning is a problem.

#4 Minor injury prone. Just age factor I guess, but he always has some sort of nagging pull strain or whatever slowing him down. Less minutes would be good for him.

I think at this point in his career he is a pretty good #5, and a #4 on a lower end bubble team. I wouldn't pay him more than 2.5m on a one year deal. Given how hard he declined in a one year period I'd be afraid of that 2nd year.

If the team he goes to has enough D depth, he could become more effective offensively by a reduction in workload. He and the rest of the Yotes D were gassed 2/3'rds into the season.

I'd love him in NJ for $3 million if we can find the room. He'd be a nice stop-gap.

If Ehrhoff leaves Vancouver because of money, would Vancouver want JOVO as replacement? If I recall, he was a fan favourite and didn't leave on bad terms and he knows the city. Heck, he could even be a replacement for Salo.

Is he still a capable puck mover?

Stats have fallen the last couple seasons.

If he's still a capable distributor of the puck, Burke likely looks at bringing him to Toronto.

He has a history with Jovocop in Vancouver.

But he'd be a third or fourth option. Likely to Markov, Wisniewski, Ehrhoff, Pitkanen or Bieksa.

You don't want Jovo replacing Ehrhoff. That is a significant downgrade.

Salo is more realistic.

Detroit for $2M seems to be the front leader. He fits into their rent-a-veteran-cheap scheme and is best buddies with Bertuzzi.

Vancouver might like him as a backup plan if they have trouble resigning their defensemen.

Dont think he'll get over 3.5M, surely most people have noticed how much he declined recently.. more likely to be around 2-2.5M - he'll take less for additional years.

I think the Canucks would be more concerned with signing a Right-Handed D than Jovo Cop.

I doubt the nucks go after him. He just doesn't fit what this team is already. Good player still, just not the direction this team is heading.

Also I saw him tonight at UFC 131, so clearly that means he's retiring from hockey to become a mixed martial artist.

I guess for every year of his contract, his cap hit will lower dramatically.. 1 year 3.5m.. 2 years 2m .. 3 years 1.2m .. No one will go 4 years

Plus he is from Windsor, right across the river from Detroit, and just down the street form me, haha.

I've been saying Detroit on a 2-2.5M contract, 2-3 year, just to finish his career at home.
