I don't think CBJ would do this. Neith would WSH.

And just when I thought I had seen the worst trade proposals today already....

WSH takes this deal, the extra cap space, a roster spot for Cody Eakin, and a potential franchise defenseman and runs away laughing.

And Scott Howsen gets himself arrested and thrown in jail if he wants to get bent over.

CBJ laugh at this as they switch to the other line and finish the deal for Carter.

Columbus would pass, too steep, if the rumours are true, Carter would be a better deal, already signed for many years (security), top notch centre, impact player. Semin just doesn't do it here.

Umberger is practically untouchable here in Columbus. Now maybe for Ovechkin

Here's a question: would CBJ trade the #8 pick straight up for Alexander Semin?

I don't think Columbus does this deal for Umberger or the #8 alone. Semin has one year at big money on his current contract... Can't see that being TOO attractive to a team that's a few years or pieces away from making a run

Ehh... it depends on how high their management is on Semin (he's clearly a divisive player) and whether or not they think they can get him signed to a multi-year deal. Washington, who is in win now mode, however, probably wouldn't be interested in this trade even if the value is there. If Semin is moved, it would probably either mean a legit 2C +3rd liner, or a D-man, would be coming back.

Even with Semin's contract, Washington isn't in trouble cap-wise. With a 62 mil salary cap, they have around 11 million, and it looks like Poti (3 million) is going on LTIR. The only RFA of note is Alzner and their UFAs other than Laich are mostly role players. They're not going to trade Semin just to free up space.

This proposal is straight out awful.

Columbus is not pushing for a cup and has no need whatsoever for Semin. Not to mention Semin is much more expensive than Umberger. Semin is signed for one more year and his future is very uncertain. I really don't see Semin wanting to play for a team that is not pushing for the cup. Umberger is a huge part of the CBJ franchise.....and you want CBJ to throw in a #8 pick?

Noone is goign to offer you a long term asset like a #8 pick for a short term asset like Semin. Least of all a rebuilding team.

We're technically not a rebuilding team per se, but otherwise this analysis is right on the money.

Honestly, I think there's all of one player I'd actually happily accept in exchange for Umberger and the 8th overall, and he's currently having concussion issues so we'd have to wait for him to pass a physical before the deal could go through.

You might get Umberger alone for Semin... but most Columbus fans are pretty high on him.

You wouldn't get the #8 alone for Semin, let alone throwing RJ in..

You wouldn't deal Umberger + 8 for Doughty, Malkin, Parise, Getzlaf, Perry, Ovechkin, Stamkos, or the Sedins?

If the blue Jackets have a position of strength, it's on the wing - so basically trading 2 of their best assets for another winger doesn't make any sense. Secondly that Package could bring back more then Semin and his 1 year 6 million dollar deal. This trade would make the Jackets a worse team next year, never mind in the future. Finally if I was the Blue Jackets I wouldn't trade either piece individually for Semin - it's not because he isn't valuable, it's that he doesn't fill a hole on the team.

Fair point - Getzlaf and Stamkos would probably get some consideration too.

Not at all - we've never actually tried to offer him for those kind of assets, unlike certain other fans offering certain other players. He just happens to be vastly more valuable to the Jackets than to any other team in the NHL.

(EDIT: Should put in a disclaimer - I'm not referring to Washington fans and Semin with that comment.)

I don't know... I think they overrate his trade value simply because there's NO reason to trade him unless you're getting a better asset in return.

He strikes me kind of like Bergeron to the Bruins, Hanzal to the Coyotes, Staal to the Penguins. Kind of guys who may not have tremendous trade value, but their value to the team is huge
