Cancun, Mexico

Hey, just looking for some information on Cancun. Going for a vacation rather the end of July, or the end of August. You only get so much reading reviews online, and obviously Cancun being a tourist hotspot it's not like there is a lot to worry about.

Just trying to find a good resort, and hopefully hear some past experiences good or bad about some trips. Also, reading that it is Hurricane season during those months?

Any information would be awesome.

Couple things come to mind. If you're younger, looking to party I'd do Cancun, but if you're looking for a 'quieter' holiday with site seeing, etc then do Mayan Riviera.

Also, just read that Air Transat flight attendants voted to strike, which would take effect after july 19, iirc. They may get an agreement done before, but just something that could throw a wrench into your plans. May also mean that you could score a cheap package with a little risk on your part.

We stayed at The Royal in Playa del Carmen. Fantastic resort, they have one in Cancun as well. Bit pricey but well worth it.

If you're going to hang out on the beach and drink your face off, then Cancun is great.

If you're going for any other reason whatsoever, I wouldn't bother.

Toatlly disagree - I've been there several times & I'm not a drinker / partier at all.

Cancun is within easy driving distance of major archeological sites (Chichen Itza, Tulum) and a couple of unique nature / amusement parks (Xcaret, Xel Ha - both highly recommended). It's a quick hop over to Isla Mujeres and Cozumel (from Playa del Carmen, <45 minutes down the road) and there are some amazing golf courses nearby, too. Tons of opportunities for watersports, of course.

All of that said, though, the core resort strip in Cancun has its reputation for a reason (although there are some very, very high-end resorts located there as well). My advice would be along the lines of Cooperalls - find something along the Riviera, or in Playa.

My one bad experience in Cancun was staying here:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Peninsula.html

Awful, awful place, although it looks like it's changed names/management since we were there in 2006 (then called "Club Carrousel"), so maybe things have improved. Lesson learned: don't automatically dismiss negative TripAdvisor reviews...

Do not stay at the Princess resort outside Playa Del Carmen. It blew up and Canadians died one week after I stayed there........

The Absolute Best place to stay in Cancun...

http://www.resortcondoscancun.com/

Stayed at Suite #1604 at the unreal Bay View Grand a couple years back when it was brand new (first to rent it). If you are looking for a deluxe, no worries, prime walking distance to all the awesome drinking and shopping sites, THIS is it!!!
The managemant company is awesome (Tim Miller) and if Carlos (might be Angel) is still looking after his properties ask to be put in contact with him as he will look after you really really well (fishing, restaurants, night life etc.). I have travelled the world and have been to many other resorts and rentals in Mexico and for the Cancun region this is a 10 out of 10... You have it all and are not relegated to a resort (if this is your thing). It does not matter what you are there for... this gives you it all.

The Omni. it is a little further down the strip, but go online and register as a prefered guest or something like that, and you will get a good rate. Eat out tho.

I'll second this. All inclusive with great in house restaurants and one of the best buffet style restaurants. Fully stocked in room bar (if you roll that way-I certainly do ).

Not having any experience with all inclusives, when they handed me a glass of wine while we were checking in I knew all was going to be good.

Great beach and day tours - the zoo and a trip to Isla Mujeres were hilites - and there is also a "shopping" district on 5th Ave not too far from the resort.

i cant remember the name of the resort we stayed at but we drove by hundreds and literally all of them looked amazing so i don't think you'll have to much trouble finding a good one.

one thing to keep in mind though, and you may have heard this somewhere already but at the airport just go straight to your shuttle dont stop to talk to any of the people there. they might seem legit but they are just tryin to scam money out of you, and they're good at it lol. cancun is beautiful though, you'll have fun

i'd go to kelowna instead this time of year. best time for mexico trips nov-may.
i didnt care for cancun that much, plus the bad rep from the cartel/dirty cops in the last couple years.
my last trip to that coast i stayed in the resort the week except for 1 excursion day trip. i'v been there enough i dont realy need to wonder the streets.
i still prefer vallarta as my mexico destination.

This.

We have arguably the best summer climate and nice long days of drenched sunshine(well normally) so why leave this Alberta weather in the summertime?

Go 5 star if you want all-inclusive. It doesn't pay to be stuck in a resort where the drinks are cheap and the food isn't good just to save a few hundred $ per person. When we went to the Dominican we stayed at an Ahmsa Marina resort and that's now on my list of things to never do again. The wine was in 4 liter milk jugs, the draft was flat and smelly, the food was blah, there were hardly any beach chairs, the ones they had were all in direct sun and noone spoke passing english. The flight was better than staying at the resort.

On the Mayan we've stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe (Coba twice and Tulum once in May of this year) because we get one real trip a year and we can't afford a swing and a miss. Everything there is good. Really nice rooms, great drinks, good food, everyone there is friendly, you don't get hosed if you're stuck buying things "in resort" there's plenty of beach chairs and lots w/shade, lots of pools and most of the people there speak decent english. Downside - very few rooms in Tulum have a great water view and none in Coba have a water view at all.

Mosquitos.

I agree that I wouldn't recommend Mexico in the summer either tho. Even in May it's only enjoyable if you have good a/c in your hotel room. You wouldn't sleep a wink without it.

You can get some nice 3 stars in Mexico. A 3 star there is a heck of a lot better then a 3 star in the Dominican. The Mexicans have been at the tourist game a lot longer and do a much better job all around.

I disagree. The weather at that time of the year in Cancun can be fantastic. If there is no tropical disturbance in the area, the weather is generally great. You will see very calm ocean conditions, fairly high humidity(but if you are near the water it won't be too bad), and usually lots of sun. Not to mention the days are about two hours longer than winter time...which means more time for enjoying the beach/ocean. Out of all the months of the year, I have enjoyed the Yucatan coast the most in the months of May and July. I would probably not vist it in Jan or Feb again(weather is just too unsettled...PV or Cabo are much better that time of year).

As for Cancun....if you enjoy Mexico and Mexican culture....stay clear. Cancun is a commerciallized concrete jungle. Think Las Vegas with a nice beach. For a real experience of Mexican paradise, travel south of Cancun. Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum have lots of great options for a great Mexican beach vacation.

Hope this helps.

The weather is generally greater here this time of year. No worries about tropical storms either.

Well the point being that in Alberta you'd be getting 18hrs of daylight in the summertime and you get just over 13 hrs in Cancun. 5hrs less daylight. Why would somebody pay dearly to do that? Hell go to Radium Hot Springs or Fairmont where its just as hot and very little rain and beautiful surroundings. Plus you can camp there and be completely comfortable. Or if you don't mind rain stay anywhere in the rockies. Or Okanagon, or Kootenay Country, Shushwap, etc etc.

This last part is good information.

Sorry in advance to intrude in the thread and its none of my business but theres lots of great things to see in this country and great vacation spots here. Its odd that people from around the world come to this great country to spend a summer vacation here when some Canadians seek warmer climes?

The time to leave this country is winter. Of course it costs more because thats when its most appealing to leave here.

When there for my honeymoon.
My wife and I were married August 14, 2010 and jetted off to Cancun the next day. We stayed at The Omni Hotel.

Here's some advice:
1. The surf is insane! I can not stress this enough. Do not wear rings. Do not have anything in your pockets (hotel room keys). Do not have ear rings on. You will lose them.

2. If you like clubs, Cancun is insane. Senior Frogs is everything you have heard and then some. Bulldog is great. Very high-end. Coco Bongo is another great, classy club. Dady O is more chill. I have been out in Vegas, NYC, Boston and SF. These clubs are as good as any I have ever been to.

3. Don't stay near these clubs. The Omni was about 10 minutes away. The hotel had a bus dropping people off downtown. It's nice to go to the crazy, instead of staying right in the middle of it.

4. Whatever hotel you stay at, they will be able to hook you up with tours and VIP bars.

I stayed at the Riu Carribe.

It's only a really good place, if you like shagging drunk american girls that think they're pornstars, or in a "Girls Gone Wild" video.

Not the best "couple's" destination. Maya Riviera is more for that.

The Brazillian Steakhouse there is pretty good. So is the Bubba Gump shrimp Company... same chain as in Time Square (I recommend the Bucket of ****).

It's also nice to go to Chichen Itza to look at the Mayan Pyramids, but DO NOT DRINK THE WATER!!!

I got sick from ordering a coke, with the ice cubes in it. ONLY drink canned drinks from the resort. Even if they're piss warm.

Took the wife and kids to the Bareclo Costa in Cancun in January. Can't think of one negative aspect from our stay there.....would definately go back. I'd question the time of year you're going, but if you have no choice you'll find the Barcelo Costa worth the money. Did a couple of their excursions and did our own thing the rest of the time.

Seriously, awesome stuff guys!

Thanks a lot. And yeah, I'm a young adult and really just looking to have a bit of fun before University takes over my life once more. I've been to Puerto Vallarta twice: Once with my girlfriend at the time, and the second time with a buddy.

A few buddies are going this time and are generally looking for a better beach(PV during the rainy season=crud) and just an overall party. The best deal we've found was a resort called "Grand Oasis Cancun".
