UFA Signing Period Policies and Procedures

The big day is here! A few things we need to be clear on:

-Random tweets don't need their own thread. If some random guy says, "Rangers might be interested in xxxx," there are a few places to put that. No sense having a thread for every UFA out there.

-Be aware of unreliable sources and fake Twitter accounts. Not everyone out there is a reliable source, so use your best judgment in reporting news.

-There's no bonus for being the first to report a signing! If you see a breaking signing that you want to report, there's a 99% chance someone else is in the process of creating a thread on it. Wait 30 seconds, refresh the board, and if it's still not reported, have at it!

Just looking to keep everything running smoothly today. If everyone takes a deep breath and relaxes, it will be a good day here.

It will be a better day if it doesn't take me 45 minutes to get on here like it does EVERY July 1st.

That's true, Double H. There's always a good possibility that we experience some server issues. The site grows with each passing day, and we're expecting record traffic today. If the board starts acting funny, try to be patient. It affects us all.

Emma, if I can make a suggestion.

Maybe we can have a stickied master thread, like this one, that also includes a list of known unreliable sources as well as known reliable sources?

So we all know which is which and who is who?

It might help prevent things from getting bogged down today.

Most people won't be bothered to look, and most people aren't going to follow the rules anyway.

To be honest the board should have one dedicated person posting the signings like RB, BB, or whomever is on top of it. Everyone else should get an infraction if they spam the same crap as everyone else because on a high bandwidth day every post counts and it only makes things harder for everyone else trying to find out what's going on.

Keep it in your pants gentlemen!

Lets also try to refrain from using short or one word posts and posting nothing but an image. If you want to add something, make sure it's relevant and has some meat to it. As Emma mentioned, the forum is going to be under extreme traffic - every bit helps.

It is a good idea, SSM, though we don't have any master list of reliable sources (or of unreliable sources). If people use common sense, we should be okay.

Reliable:
Mainstream guys--McKenzie, Kypreos, etc
Established team beat writers--Brooks, Zipay, and so forth

Unreliable:
Rumormongers: Incarcerated Bob, NHL Sources Say, crap like that
Random Twitter accounts with 2 followers

Suffice it to say, if you post a rumor to a source that is then replaced with ******, it's not acceptable by HF standards. That doesn't mean, though, that anything that shows up as a valid link is okay. Just use your heads, people!

Quick question does constantly refreshing strain the server?

If so I suggest anyone without a twitter feed goes and get's one. For today following Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger would suffice. Open twitter in a new tab and leave it anytime a tweet is available it will notify you.

Saves you from having to refresh HF constantly and you'll know within minutes who has signed and where.

Don't they usually switch to the Mobile version of the site during FA?

They should make that the default today (is the text only one still around?).

If you guys need an admin, I'M FOR HIRE! (Seriously, I admin HA linux clusters for a living).

It would. Don't be surprised if we see features disabled within the next few hours.

I think most here just see it as a bit of a dick sizing contest. Just kind of a ha ha I beat you too it. With that being said, I think its hilarious to see 39 of the same threads posted within seconds of each other on the main board and some people crying because their thread wasnt stickied even though they posted it first.

Kids will be kids. I'm sure it is nice to see your username up as the thread starter. May I suggest masking the thread starter's username for big days like this? Then there truly is no bonus...

I'm gonna pop in and out of here just a little bit today. I'll be watching McKenzie and Dreger and the Rangers beat guys and keeping track for myself on a word doc or something.

It's always really amusing to read the first reactions a few hours after the fact.

Why do I get the feeling every single request will be ignored. I already seen it a few times and it's only a bit after 1PM

Today went exceptionally well, considering the circumstances. Good work, ladies and gents.

Quick reminder though:

-"this"
-"fixed"
-random image

...all considered spam. Waste bandwidth and put more strain on the servers. No more!

Lets not make new threads that refer to Richards in some way when we have one stickied at the top of the page.

All Richards discussion goes there, please use it.

Thanks
