Preferably for me we'd let him walk and get a left handed veteran D to play with Weber on the bottom pairing, or let Spacegoat take that role.
PMD in the $4.5-5m range are hot commodities. Look at Tomas Kaberle. He's been one of the biggest trade targets for the past 2 years and look at how little he produced this year compared to Wiz.

Signing Wiz for 4-5 years at $4.75 would be good asset management. You can always trade him in a year or three. There will always be a demand on contending teams for a PP specialist that can put up points.

Even an overpriced and washed up dman like McCabe can get you assets. Wiz will be in his prime over the next 3 years.

Losing him is going to be worse than losing Streit.

You build from the net out. You start with Carey Price in net. You find a better backup like NYR, Nucks and Buffalo did to give your star a break.

Then you work on your defence. We need to focus on building our d this year.

Sign Markov, Subban is here, sign Wiz, we got Yemelin, Gill and Gorges will be locked up. Spacegoat will hang around for the year. We'll have Diaz chomping at the heals come January.

I actually think we need 1 more NHL calibre dman to keep around though. I think you need 8 dmen to get through the year. Dmen play a much more physical game, block shots, they are going to have 1-5 game injury spells.

Look at how many games Vancouver lost on defence. I've got no clue but I bet Boston lost its fair share too. You have to plan for that, its not like dman are finesse players who don't get hurt.

Then next year, we can focus on tweaking our forward core. We'll have a better idea of where Patches will be. Gomez will define himself one way or another. Eller will either produce or we'll have to start planning otherwise. DD will emerge as something or other.

The point is, we need the year to figure out how our forwards are going to develop and how we need to proceed. Tying money up in Brooks Laich will be a huge mistake. What has Malone done for Tampa Bay?

There's a good chance (Y)Emelin will make us forget about Wisniewski at less than 20% of the cost.

Emelin has nowhere near the offensive upside and production of Wisniewski. Wis is a better skater, has a better first pass, and a better shot. Emelin might be a bit more physical, and better defensively, - but I'm still making Wisniewski a Hab a priority if I'm the GM.

If the Habs let Wisniewski walk it will be a HUGE mistake. Mark my words.......

Wiz, Markov, Gorges and Subban can be signed for any length, they are easy tradable assets. Not saying we should trade them, especialy Subban, but signing this kind of guys is never a problem.

I wouldn't be against trading that guy named Gorges.....

Expectation are very low when you'r making only 1 M$, he was a fan favorite because he was "underrated " But now he will ask for like 3M$.....it's a hole different story. His value is all time high so we can get a very good return for him.

Not much to add to the discussion except to say I loved what Wiz did for Montreal.

Cool guy too...

Year Team League GP G A PTS +/- PPG PPA SHG SHA GWG PIM Shots PCT Hits
2010-11 Montreal NHL 43 7 23 30 4 4 12 0 0 2 20 87 8.05 56
2010-11 NY Islanders NHL 32 3 18 21 -18 3 10 0 0 0 18 71 4.23 52
2010-11 Total NYI/Mtl NHL 75 10 41 51 -14 7 22 0 0 2 38 158 6.33 108

You look at this stat line and tell me it is not a big deal if Wisniewski is allowed to walk....

30 pts in 43 games as a Hab
+4 with Habs vs. -18 with Isles
Over 100 hits in 75 games

But yet many are jumping for joy that we may have signed "Glass Joe" to a two year extension at $5.75 million per

Wisniewski is a deal at anything under $5 million a season. His so-called defensive liability is grossly overrated, and he got better in his own end under Martin's system. He also took less penalties while he dished out hits at the same career pace.

This is too easy guys............ Wisniewski should be the target for PG right now.

Sad thing about Wiz is he fits perfectly in Boston, at least attitude-wise, but his role on the Habs is less obvious. In various combination, the group of Markov, Subban, Weber and Gorges mean the team's already signed two first PP unit-capable D, two bigtime RH shots, four basically undersized D, etc. We're just too friggin small, in all areas. And I didn't even mention Spacek.

Thats my one fear of losing wiz...Is that he goes to Boston. I see it as a great fit if they let Kaberle go. I'd hate it. Big slapper, has some sand paper and will drop them. Please go West wiz.

He'll sign in Detroit, then in 2012, Detroit will be moved to the East and in the NE division and we'll regret it.

Actually I think Detroit is going to slowly go down hill. I don't see any good Datsyuk / Zetterburg type prospects panning out for them in the next 5 years to pick up the slack. Also, we're starting to see the problems created by normalcy in Howard. Combine that with Lids retiring after next season.

Detroit and NJD's hay days are coming to an end. They'll still be competitive but not the power houses that they were.

It would not shock me to see his rights traded for a 2nd or 3rd round pick in this year's draft if he can't be signed by Friday. I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but PG has to manage assets.
