Carter

Have we thought about carter?? or is he completely out of the question?

Now, I'm not a Carter fan, but he had some decent seasons here and would be fairly cheap, maybe a million/year.

If he was only a million a year yes, but then we'd have to get rid of Laraque in order to have space for him. Not that I mind getting rid of Laraque. Within the next year or two he should be sent away so that RW prospects can get some playing time.

I'd only be interested in signing Carter if he came super cheap (under $1.5 million/season)..

If we could get him for our 7th round pick in 2127 and his current team offered to pay his salary plus an extra $8M per season I'd take him back in a heartbeat.

But he's a UFA isn't he?

If we could get him for around $1.2-1.5 Million he would be good here. That's about all he's worth in my books. For large periods of the season he disappears but when he finally does show up he's awesome.

Oh, by the looks of it you're right.

I don't want Anson back here anyways, just don't like the way he plays.

Anson Carter would make a good lin with Smyth and York.
He would get at least 55 points with them.

Anson Carter has some holes, but so does Petr Nedved. He isn't likely to be signed because of the comments from management after he left, but he isn't horrible or anything. Just limited in what he can do to help a team. imo the Oilers understood that and that is why he had success here.

No room for Carter, not interested. personally he's completely out of the question. we still need to re-sign Jason Smith & Petr Nedved, though we're getting closer to signing Nedved, I can't see room in the oilers budget to take on the extra 1 - 1.5 (depending what he's looking for) if he was that cheap i'm sure another team would have signed him by now. we can't afford it, it'll just stall development of our younger players & add unnecessary money to our tight budget.

I don't think Edmonton is cool enough for the best dressed man in hockey, "Hollywood" Carter.

I understand why people wouldn't want him back based on hockey merits but why insult him personally. He was very respectful of the teams fans and generally a good guy off the ice.

On another note, Who was it that he fought on HNIC that one game. Man I remember running around the house afterwards yapping about that for a few mins. And the funny thing is when he was interviewed on after hours he was very soft spoken and downplayed the whole thing. It was like Jekyll and Hyde.

Ya, that's fair to say. But if they are going to sign Nedved then you have to think that they are deciding to play a certain strategy, and Carter (or preferably Hemsky) would fit that much better than Dvorak on Petr's right side. Dvo is too complete of a player to be wasted in that role.

To me it is akin to Turgeon. Hitchcock didn't handle that well, expected too much maybe? Thought he could make him into a better player maybe? I dunno.

But this last season Turgeon put up very good numbers ... solely because he played butter-soft minutes (And I mean Oates-soft minutes, pish-easy). Of course by definition it means that all the other forwards have to take on tougher opposition ... but there's always rough with smooth. Kent Nilsson was always the same, and was always a heckuva guy away from the rink (as Nedved and Turgeon are oft reported to be as well) ... he just was what he was, it was 'just a game' to him. And in the grand scheme of things that's probably the most sensible outlook on the whole thing.

They have to make it easy for Petr. OTT does it with Spezza/Havlat ... N.J did it with Mogilny/Gomez a couple years ago ... it does work, I don't like it personally ... but MacTavish will have to play the cards in his hand, and I think we'll see this sort of alignment against the stronger teams in the league. (assuming that Nedved does sign here)

I take it you didn't read up on some of the comments Carter made indirectly after he left. Something to the effect of him not fitting in with his flare for Sean "Puffy" Combs fashion, surrounded by people who prefer WesternWear & Rodeo boots.

Well said Loki, Carter always seemed like a really decent guy. I remember a boston Globe article where he corrected the interviewer for talking about EDM like it was a Siberian village. Always respected that sort of thing, I mean its an out-of-town paper so its not like he's blowing smoke up our arses.

Also a helluva interesting interview. IMHO an understanding and insight into the effect of emotion and momentum swings in hockey games that few hockey players can articulate.

Having said that ... I hope the Oilers don't get him back. Just not good enough to merit the kind of coin he'll be asking for IMO.

My dream scenario would be to sign Carter for the same amount Hemsky makes and cryogenically freeze Hemsky for a couple years (Demolition Man-style). Then during that process Hemsky could develop some puck strength and a bit of a killer instinct, while Carter scores a few goals on the PP for us. This way we get a scorer on the right side and we don't lose development time for Hemsky.

PLEASE no Anson Carter - at any price.

Doesn't provide enough "big game" scoring for the top 2 lines, floats too much for the bottom two lines. I'd rather be patient and watch Hemsky develop than plug Carter in there. The year we traded him away our "sniper" had a grand total of ONE game-winning goal.
Yeah, a real difference-maker, that Carter.

When Carter was with the Oilers, I always drafted him in my hockey pool (in which he was never a keeper). I really enjoyed stating "I select Anson Williams from Happy Days". I thought that was pretty darn amusing, even if none of the other 18 people at the hall did. For that reason alone, I think signing "Potsie" would merit consideration.

Not the HNIC game where Carter was on after hours, I agree with Easilee ... I'm sure that was Bill Lindsay.

I'm one of the few (maybe only) persons in the world that shelled out 300 bucks for a real deal Anson Carter third jersey. I wouldn't mind at all having him back at a bargain. I don't see him coming back though.
