Need to Know:
It’s the tenth anniversary of the Kamloops Blazers Memorial Cup Championship in 1994, the first of back-to-back wins and the second of a three-in-four-years run that marked one of junior hockey’s greatest dynasties. A key member of the back-to-back wins was big defenceman and Edmonton native Jason Strudwick. A fearsome 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Jason jumped quickly into an NHL lineup (with his draft club, the Islanders) in 1997-98 and impressed with his physical play. After a move back to Canada to play for the Canucks in his rookie season, he became a regular for more than four seasons on the West Coast. He then signed with the Blackhawks in 2002 and added much-needed veteran leadership to the team. He overcame several injuries last season that limited his contributions to the team. In spite of the injuries he set a career high in shifts per game. Single, Jason spends his summers in Edmonton.

Recently:
Jason, who just turned 29 over the weekend, signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers yesterday.

Did You Know:
Jason uses mountain biking as a means of keeping his legs strong in the off-season.

NHLPA.com Bio:
Jason Strudwick was drafted 63rd overall in the 1994 Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. He made his NHL debut with one game in 1995-96. In 1997-98, Jason played 17 games for the Islanders and 11 games the Vancouver Canucks. In 1998-99, Jason played 65 games. In 1999-2000, he scored his first NHL goal. In 2000-01, Jason led the Canucks with a +16 plus/minus rating as the team made the playoffs for the first time in five years. On July 15, 2002, Jason signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks. That season, he played 48 games and recorded 87 penalty minutes.
