The Rangers are watching Sheldon Souray

SportsnetSpec Souray would have to go through re-entry waivers, so no guarantee Rangers would get him. More on Sportsnet.ca soon.

SportsnetSpec New York Rangers watching Sheldon Souray, with scouts at 3 straight Hershey games starting tonight. GM Sather also has been to Hershey..

the rangers are one of those teams that have a lot of guts and youthful energy that could make a deep run with a couple nice smart additions. souray would seem to be one. a souray and a nice playmaking centerman could get the rangers a coupe rounds deep into the playoffs. that could be invaluable for the youngsters on this team.

*Puts gun to head.*

No need with THAT contract. Maybe if he was making 1.5 mil and could stay healthy.

They would never land him, anyway.

Sather being there gives me the impression it's pretty serious. Get's me a little woried as well. If it's a trade, there are a lot of other really nice pieces that EDM has.

More than likely this has to do with him on re-entry though, correct? In which case there are a ton of ways Souray could fit nicely here.

I really just don't want to change the make up of this team for Sheldon Souray unless the part of the team being changed is Drury.

if the Rangers can grab him on re-entry waivers ..go for it 2.25mil for him aint bad. But to trade for him is just stupid, cause you could lose him to re-enrty

At this point he'd be a way too expensive version of MAB.

Slats is going to be looking to upgrade the PP.

I think the Rangers mindset is thinking a hot powerplay going into the last 28 games gives the Rangers a chance to make some noise this season.
Don't see that center coming in to save the day in the next month. Going to have to land that offensive potential from the back end.

Not looking forward to seeing this guy play in his own end if they land him. Could be ugly.

2.25? Isles pull another block??

Maybe....

Drury + 2nd for Souray?

Obviously the NMC, but Edmonton wants themselves rid of Souray ASAP, and have a ton of cap space. And with a young team, they could use a locker room guy like Chris. So, we get some PP help this year. Then, we Redden Souray in the summer, sign Richards, and voila. Problem solved.

The last time this was a rumor, Edmonton said they had no intentions of putting him through re-retry waivers. What's changed? They're already paying him his NHL salary in real dollars and have done so for the last 121 days. Where's the urgency to suddenly get rid of him now with only 65 days remaining left in the season?

They're better off looking for a trading partner after June 1st. I'm sure they will find one and wind up getting a commodity instead of paying $2.25M for nothing.

The New York Rangers are actively scouting Edmonton Oilers castoff defenceman Sheldon Souray, and could begin the process of acquiring his services within the next few days, Sportsnet.ca has learned.

Rangers pro scout Kevin Maxwell is credentialed for tonight’s game in Atlantic City between the Hershey Bears and the Albany Devils, and another Rangers scout is on his way to Hershey for back-to-back Bears games Saturday and Sunday against Manitoba.

Rangers general manager Glen Sather has already passed through Hershey to have a firsthand look at Souray, who is healthy and back playing for the Bears, after suffering a pair of injuries this season.

Gilroy is RFA in the summer.

He might be off this team anyway.

**** Souray.

3G 6A in what, 19GP (in the AHL)? And we want him here to help our PP? Really?

What an idiotic idea. Hopefully it's not true.

I reallllllllly hope this doesn't happen. Sather's either got to have half a brain or some grand ideas if he's also got designs on bringing Richards here in the summer.

He's also got 67 SOG in those 19 Games, which is something anyone playing our PP is currently lacking. I don't think this is a terrible idea *IF* he's got game left. The guy did score 19 PP goals in 2006-7 and he's 34 - which isn't ancient by defenseman standards. He's also coming off a hand injury and has only played 19 games.

If he sucks, we can always send him to the minors. At a 2.25 cap hit on re-entry, he's not a great risk and there is tons of upside if he can find his game.

I do it for something small - a 4th or 5th rounder or a mid-level prospect. Why not?

A healthy Souray would definitely boost the PP and no doubt add some snarl on D. "Healthy" being the key word here. I'm not so sure about this, but I'm not against it.

His cap hit would be 2.7 million for this year and next (50% of 5.4 cap number), not half of the 4.5 million real dollars he is making this year.

Sending Souray to Hartford isn't really an option. Wade Redden was already the Ranger's one large contract mulligan. With Redden already on the books for 6.5 million, you are only allowed to exceed the cap by 10% in the offseason. Redden's contract will be greater than that 10% bump, so effectively, the Rangers true cap is less than maximum salary cap number until the end of training camp.

The cap hit for this year (he HAS to go through re-entry) would be 2,700,000/82 x 28 = 921,951.00 for this year + 2.7 next year if you want to get technical.

I doubt he slides to us with the Isles around, anyway.

The dude has a god damn rocket from point. I'd take him for under 3.

dump gilroy, trade christensen with him. include a 5th or 6th if you gotta.

we'd have what? about 10 million in salaries but we'd be paying just below 5 for avery and the S.S.
