Thoughts? He'd be a very good replacement for Wolski if we trade him or buy him out. He's only slightly more expensive, so we could still add Richards even if we traded for him.
I'd be very interested in bringing him in.

We'd have more than enough cap space if we dumped Wolski to bring in Malone.

Understood. The point he was making is that if we take Malone off their hands, Tampa Bay would then have sufficient room (regardless of any internal cap) to meet or exceed any offer for Richards. So, ironically, in acquiring a winger for Richards, you're actually improving the odds that he signs elsewhere.

having cap space doesn't make it a good deal. he has 4 more years left on his terrible contract and he has gotten worse and more injured each season since signing. i've always like malone and if it was 1 year left i'm all over it. but i don't touch that contract with another teams cap space. i'd rather keep wolski for the year and then go after a better player...

Get Richards, then we could trade for him...he plays a great game screening goalies and has played LW most of his career. But his contract is messy...I would see it as a deal giving them cap relief, so I wouldnt send much of anything back. Also he's more of a 2-3 LW not a 1.

not sure how we are giving him 9m unless drury retires. but tb doesn't have to outbid us. rumor is that richards wants to play in tb so all they have to do is be able to make a respectable/comparable offer. removing malone lets them comfortably offer him 6.5-7 mil which likely gets it done.
Between Wolski's buyout and Malone's cap hit, you are looking at a combined cap hit of ~5 mil for the next 2 years, and then Malone still has another 2 years left after that at 4.5 mil.

He was great for PIT. His contract is not terrible for a centre. Too expensive for just a role winger he became. We need no more Drury type, we have them.
Contract concerns like others have stated. The sensible thing would be to send Wolski the other way if it is centered around cap relief... after the Richards signing. Why should we buy out Wolski just to create space for Malone? Tampa saves on length and dollar, we should probably get more in return.
I think Malone is a great player to have on the team come playoff time and I think with him and Dubi on LW it gives great balance to the first couple of lines.
The problem is the length of the contract. Other than that, I'd take him.
