Plantation resident Colin Suellentrop has been selected to participate on the 2010 U.S. Under-18 Select Team that will compete in this year's Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

The international ice hockey event, also known as the U-18 Junior World Cup, will take place Aug. 9-14 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Suellentrop is one of 22 players chosen for the Under-18 Select Team. He was among those evaluated during the recent Boys' Select 17 Player Development Camp in Rochester, N.Y.

The tournament will feature eight countries separated into two groups. The U.S. entry will be in Group A, along with the Czech Republic, Finland and Russia. This group will play its preliminary games in Breclav, Czech Republic.
Quote:
Suellentrop was drafted in May 2009 by the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. He was the Generals' third-round pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection and drafted 44th overall.

The Oshawa Generals club, based in Oshawa, Ontario, is one of the most successful franchises in Canadian Hockey League history. Its many notable alumni include Bobby Orr, Eric Lindros and Marc Savard.

The Generals have earned a record 12 OHL championships and are four-time winners of the Memorial Cup, awarded annually to the Canadian Hockey League's junior hockey club champion.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman enjoyed a strong rookie season with the Generals. Now he has an opportunity to represent his country on the international stage.

I actually know a bit about this kid. He really turned around his defensive game this year and went from being one of their worst defensive D's, to being one of their go to guys on D. The story I read on him (which i will now go look for) talked about rare it is to have a 17 y.o be your main p.k guy and how that end of last year you never would have guessed it would be him.

That's all well and good, but what about the most important thing?

What's his pump up song?

His hockey talents mean nothing to me if his taste in music sucks.

Oshawa Generals Defenceman Colin Suellentrop has been selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 4th round 116th overall of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Suellentrop, a native of Plantation, Florida had a solid season with the Generals where he registered 14 points in 59 regular season games while posting a very good +21 plus/minus rating, which was the best among Generals defenceman. He was also a key component to the Generals playoff success where he registered 2 assists in 10 post-season contests.

“Colin often flies under the radar compared to some of the more offensive defenceman,” said Generals Head Coach and General Manager Chris DePiero. “He has been a key part of our blueline the last two seasons and to see him be rewarded for his hard work is a thrill.”

“He is a big, strong, and steady, shut-down defenceman who I think will one day be a great asset to the Flyers.”

Suellentrop was originally selected by the Generals in the 3rd round, 44th overall of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. He put up solid numbers of 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points in 54 games in his rookie season with the Generals during the 2009-10 season.

The 6-foot-2 defender also has international experience as he represented the United States on their under-18 team at the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament and helped them to a silver medal finish.

good skater

he can rock and sock wingers coming into our zone. their are other areas where he can improve, but at the moment, he is fast enough for the NHL. and if he gets into a fight, every so often, he'll be a fan fav. and with strength and conditioning, 200-205 lbs, boy oh boy, this guy could rock.

Fourth Round – #116 Overall

Holmgren deviated from selecting a forward for the only time in the draft with his fourth round selection, instead taking Oshawa Generals defenseman Colin Suellentrop. The 6′ 1″, 190-pound native of Plantation, Florida turned 18 earlier this month, and finished his second year with Oshawa. Not an offensive threat, Suellentrop notched just one goal and 20 points in 113 OHL games over two seasons. He also racked up 144 PIMs. One thing that did improve greatly was his plus / minus rating. Suellentrop went from a horrible -37 in 2009-10 to a more than solid +21 during the recently-completed campaign.

Suellentrop projects as a tough, hard-hitting defensive defenseman.
