I thought it would be good to maintain one of these for the next 11 days as teams have to qualify their RFAs. I don't think any team has come out and qualified any yet, or not qualified any yet, but I expect we'll see these starting next week. Feel free to help me with updating this tread, as well as to use it to discuss which players may or may not be qualified.

Aaron Portzline's Puckrakers Blog says that Columbus has already qualified both Jakub Voracek and Marc Methot (Had to do it early for insurance reasons for the WHC).

George Richards' On Frozen Pond blog says that Florida will not qualify either Steve Bernier or Byron Bitz.

I'll wait for something official, though, before I update either list.

I think you're right but could the Habs still qualify them so that they can keep their rights?

Yeah, there's a handful of guys on the list whom have already signed overseas (Osala, Regan, Zaborsky, Vishnevskiy, Olimb, Wesslau, Kana, Kalus, Reddox, Moller, Fransson, Dawes, Boyd and Klubertanz) but their NHL clubs can still qualify them and maintain their rights should said player decide to come back to the NHL next year. Some will, many won't. But, I figure I'll add them as it comes.

Bitz and Bernier won't be qualified by the Panthers. Confirmed by assistant GM
Quote:
The worst kept secret among the Panthers? The future of Byron Bitz and Steve Bernier. Both are restricted free agents. For now. They'll be free to sign anywhere else soon enough. “You can assume that's true,'' Santos said. “I'm not expecting them back.''

I think they will qualify Dawes because of his success with the Dogs. However Boyd is gone (he was waived so many times this year ). It's only speculation from my part but I believe that Klubertanz, Picard and Boyd won't get qualified. Not sure about Pouliot and Russell. They might want to keep Pouliot but his QO of 1,35 M is very high.

Wonder if there will be any bold GMs who will attempt to offer sheet any RFAs. The Rangers have a few RFAs that I would think will draw a lot of consideration for an offer sheet from rival GMs.

Yes, there's a separate thread for that. This one is about qualifying offers.

What are the chances ATL/WIN give a qualifying offer to Anthony Stewart?

A QO to Anthony Stewart would be a given, I'd think. He still could be used in a trade, though.

So do they need to give him one before July 1st before GM's can start signing him to an offer sheet or whatever?

The Canadians can make a qualifying offer to Nigel Dawes but he will become a Group 3 (unrestricted) free agent if he doesn't sign by July 1, 2012. Next year, he can accept the qualifying offer or wait until free agency and try to get a better offer from another team. The Canadiens can tender a qualifying offer to keep his rights (and away from other teams). However, when a team tenders a qualifying offer to a restricted free agent, it counts against the club's salary for the first half of July.

Per CBA:
"Qualifying Offer extended by a Club, the Player Salary provided for in such Qualifying
Offer shall not commence counting against a Club's Averaged Club Salary when the
Qualifying Offer is made, but the Club must have Payroll Room equal to or in excess of
the amount of Player Salary set forth in such Qualifying Offer at the moment that the
Qualifying Offer could be accepted (i.e., July 1 of a League Year). In all events, the
Player Salary provided for in a Qualifying Offer shall cease counting against a Club's
Averaged Club Salary when the Qualifying Offer expires.

Jay Feaster announced yesterday they had tendered qualifying offers to both Leland Irving and Brendan Mikkelson.

They have not decided on the rest of our RFA's at the moment.

Good to know. Apparently the scuttlebutt on twitter is that Irving is getting offers from the KHL.

More money?

The door to NHL is pretty much closed for Irving for the next two years with the signing of Karlsson.

Money is always nice, however I don't see Irving as the type of guy to pass on starting 55 games next season for his organization even if that is in the AHL.

But you never know.

Exactly what I was thinking. He could get more money and a chance to see if he is a genuine starter for a professional team and maybe use the leverage to get him an NHL job in 2012-13. Calgary re-signing Karlsson means that, barring injury, he'll never play in the NHL for the next two seasons.

I agree. Irving is exploring options and I don't blame him for doing so.
