Rangers - Blue Jackets - Maple Leafs

3 Way Trade

Rangers get:
Nikita Filatov (from Columbus)
1st round pick - 30th overall (from Toronto)
2nd round pick - 37th overall (from Columbus)

Blue Jackets get:
1st round pick - 25th overall (from Toronto)
Erik Christensen (from Rangers)

Maple Leafs get:
1st round pick - 15th overall (from New York)

Rationale:
- I believe that Toronto would love to package #25 and #30 to move up in the draft. Toronto is likely to prefer quality over quantity.

- Columbus is rumored to be willing to take a 4th round pick for the rights to Filatov. If that's the case, I'm sure that moving up from #37 to #25 is the equivalent of a 4th round pick. Columbus can then take another building block for the future, a better one than is available at #37. Aaron Portzline has more on the Blue Jackets and Filatov at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content...s.html?sid=101

- The Rangers don't need a defenseman, especially after acquiring Tim Erixon from Calgary, and it appears that the best available player at #15 may be just that. To trade down from #15, the Rangers acquire #25 and #30 from Toronto and then ship the higher pick to Columbus, with Filatov bridging the gap. The Rangers may be able to coax Filatov to play in North America, where Columbus has failed.

- I felt that the idea of trading #15 to Columbus for Filatov and #37 may be an overpayment given Columbus' reported demands of a 4th round pick, which is why the Rangers bring in Toronto to make it happen.

Thoughts?

So essentially Nikita Filatov for the 25th, because Christensen is even more useless than Nikita was.

unless there's a guy they really want on draft day I don't see their incentive to do this.

From the article in the Columbus Dispatch:

And then there's Nikita Filatov, who is quickly running out of time to prove his NHL worthiness. If the right offer is made - a fourth-round draft pick, a middling prospect or an aged veteran - Filatov will be sent packing.

i guess it would allow us to flip both firsts to move up for Larrson or comprable player...or helps package for either Burns or Carter...

Let me ask you this. Is a move up from 37 to 25 equivalent to a 4th round pick? If so, based on what the Columbus Dispatch is reporting, the Rangers would be giving Columbus exactly what they want, not a gang ****.

Let's look at it as separate deals.

Is it Rangers destruction to trade #15 to Toronto for #25 and #30? If so, what else would the Rangers have to add?

Is it Rangers destruction to trade #25 and Erik Christensen (a veteran) to Columbus for #37 and Nikita Filatov? I'm working off of the value given by their own writers. Their own writer says he can be had for a 4th.

Thank you for the detailed analysis.

Can you give me a little more on what's awful? Is it the Toronto end of the deal? By most accounts, it's a shallow draft. Would it be not awful if the Leafs moved #25 and #39 for #15 rather than #25 and #30?

An aged veteran? Are you freakin' kidding me?!?!?

Preparing for a slew of proposals centered around "Filatov for our 30-something grinding fourth liner"

As far as Portzline goes: consider the source, The guy basically has proven over the course of the last two years that he is really no closer to this franchise's GM than Joe Blow on the Street is. Coaching candidates got two interviews before he was even made aware they had interviewed once. We have independent CBJ bloggers that seem to have a better window into their contacts than this guy does.

Is it really that bad? I think its good. Maybe switch the 30th to 39th + 85th ? I don't really see how Colombus gets bent over. Filatov does not have much value, the OP even provided a. valid source.

So essentially the 25+39+85 for 15. (Or swap the 85th with D'amigo)

Filitov for a substantial move up in the draft and Christensen (a good 4th line SO specialist)

And Rangers gain an underachiever in the hope that he finds his game, and a couple later pick (which are not that below 15)

The deal itself isn't terrible, I'm bashing Portzline as an extremely credible source on this and the ridiculous 4th rounder talk today, but I would say no if they plan on packaging the 8th overall to get an established player. If the CBJ hang on to the 8th overall, this makes much more sense to me.

In my opinion, Howson probably can get at least a second rounder for Filatov right now. His value might be slipping, but I think its about right there now...

If he doesn't make the team in camp, I'd expect a heavy plummet in his value then...

If he is that bad of a source, maybe one of your mods can have his name/links removed from the "Other: Recognized Media Sources" stickied thread in this forum. There are posts there from CBJ posters saying he is reliable.

It's a good proposal, better than 95% of the stuff I've seen on this board, but

Filatov
1st round pick - 30th overall (from Toronto)
2nd round pick - 37th overall (from Columbus)

for
15th overall
Erik Christensen

is way off.

30th + 37th < 15th overall

Filatov >>> Christensen

37 to 25 is about a mid-2nd.
