Post Your Complete Cap Compliant Line up for next season

I enjoy making lineups so I've been messing around with them recently. It's been reported that the cap might go up to 62.2 million. Try to make your line ups somewhat realistic, and if you think something is unlikely to happen but you felt like putting it anyways i.e. getting rid of Shelley please make a note of it.

Here is one possibility I came up with that would mean not re-signing Leino and trading Carle for picks and or prospects so there wouldn't be a cap hit. I think Leino is actually likely to be re-signed based on the fact that Holmgren checked in with him before signing Versteeg. This could have just been Homer's way of trying to keep Leino from getting off his game down the stretch and in the playoffs by worrying about a contract, but I kind of think it means something.

I included Gustafsson and Read because they are both cheap and I'd really like to see them get a chance. However, I don't know if they could handle the NHL yet.

O'Donnell is apparently open to the idea of playing another season but, hasn't decided one way or the other.

Quote:
“Yes, I want to come back,” O'Donnell said. “I’m 39, so you wait until you see how the body feels. Sometimes when the year is over, you feel great and then four or five days later, little things start to nag that you didn’t think about. I think I still have something left in the tank.

“I’ll sit down with my wife and agent and figure out the road we’ll go. But we had a nice time here.”
http://www.csnphilly.com/05/12/11/Fl...505&feedID=704

The purpose of the 1.23 cap hit for O'Donnell is so the team can bring up forwards such as Wellwood, Rinaldo, or Sestito if needed.

I don't know that much about other teams around the league, but here are some possible defenseman that I have heard or guessed were decent that could be hired for 1.5 million or less. I think all of these guys played the pk at least some but neither Babchuk (half a minute) nor Boynton (a little less than a minute) had a lot of PK toi on average.

Karlis Skrastins - Salary of 1.65/hit of 1.375 -- made 1.1 for salary in 09-10

I haven't really begun looking into next season yet, but this is a first thought. I want Vokoun this summer, that is pretty much all I've decided so far. 3.4M for three years would be ideal in my mind. Not sure how realistic it is. Probably not at all. NHL GM's and I don't seem to think in the same way quite often.

On defense Carle is magically traded for picks/prospects somewhere to open up space for Vokoun and hopefully Gustafsson is ready to step in and log some of his minutes. Rivet replaces O'Donnell bringing toughness, grit and veteran presence. He had a terrible year last year, but I think it has to be injury related since the drop off was so dramatic. Hopefully he can rebound and if he does he'll be a tremendous bottom pairing dman for this team. Bartulis should see some more games next year in this scenario. Rivet could use a break once in a while, Gustafsson could probably benefit from watching a few games now and then as well.

Powe and Nödl are just getting what they are owed for next year if I've understood how these things works. I might go a little higher for Powe if he'd sign up for some more years, I like what he brings. Matt Read is in the lineup but could be replaced with guys like Wellwood or Holmstrom, with some line changes being made. I think it's time to say to our prospects that there is a spot open for competition. If none of them turns out to be ready, then there's always a few guy left without a home after each summer that can be signed pretty cheap to fill out the last spot on the roster. And Nödl can function as the last top 9 player even if I'd prefer him on the fourth line. Higgins is someone I wanted this past summer, so I put him in this year as well. He has been pretty good from what I've seen in the playoffs though, so he might be pricing himself out of our reach this year.

Bobrovsky could perhaps be the starter in the AHL and a backup goalie signed with less of a cap hit. We already have Leighton and Backlund signed as well though, who knows what will happen with the goalie situation though.

Again, I suck at guessing what players will receive as UFA's. Never underestimate the stupidity of an NHL GM. I remember a few years ago thinking we might be looking into signing Ron Hainsey only for Atlanta to throw that ridiculous contract on him. That was a couple of millions more than I thought anyone would give him...

Nodl's QO must be roughly at least 775k (not sure if bonuses effect how it's calculated)

I don't think bonuses has any effect on the qualifying offer and Nödl's salary was 650k last year. I might be wrong though. Can't exactly brag about knowing the CBA like the inside of my hand...

Of course, I just used the bare minimum of what they could receive. I don't know really how it usually works out. Is it the norm to just go with the minimum raise or is it usually that and then some?

His NHL salary was 735k in his last season, so a QO must be at least 1.05x735k = 771.75k.

Ok, I thought he had a 650k contract with 200k bonuses for some reason. Well, it doesn't change too much in my setup. It is still pretty much highly unlikely.

I'll go with this. Since I just realized Matt Read will have to be waived to not be on the roster.

There is some leeway in replacing Rinaldo with Shelly, when Homer doesn't waive him. Or replacing OD with Walker, when Homer doesn't waive him, but not enough room for both

Leino is as good as gone. Carcillo too. Dump Versteeg for a 7th rounder. Dump Carle for a 6th. Alert the scouting staff that they'll need to do some homework this time around so we don't have to draft another one of Luukko's kids.

Sign Bryzgalov.

Bring in Brooks Laich if he isn't re-signed.

See if we can sign Gagne on the cheap.

Re-sign Powe and Nodl. I'd consider giving OD another year too.

Let the kids play. Wellwood/Testwuide/Holmstrom/Read/Sestito can battle it out for the last forward spot. Let Bartulis/Gustafsson have a chance too.

I don't think Leino, Carcillo or Carle will be here - this lineup doesn't allow it
If Shelley was gone we could get another speedy/defensive piece I am sure.... but he isn't going anywhere

I really think people are doing versteeg a dis-credit here. Put him on Carters/Briere's wing and see what happens. Lavy tried to force a chemistry between him and Richards, which obviously wasn't there.

I thought he was supurb in the buffalo series, and got absolutly no recognition. He played with a torn stomach wall. That has got to have some serious effect on you.

Verbeauty sucks. We don't need any more dancers out there. Put him on Briere's wing and see him and Danny enjoy a -3 on the night.

Say no to these shrimps with no defensive awareness and no grit.

Why are so many people penciling in Matt Read to be in the top 9 this year? He's played what, 15 games in the AHL and now he's ready for an NHL scoring line as a 25 year old rookie?

Same reason Nodl was in the top 9. It is not like we have much wiggle room with cap space if we are going to sign a legit goalie.

We aren't going to be able to run 3 great scoring lines like last year.

Its just as good as penciling in any other Flyers prospect

And we shouldn't try anymore!

Depth doesn't mean anything when your depth doesn't play defense. Chicago's cup winning team had some great two-way forwards. We have, well, an injured Richards who sucked for the most of the year.

I wouldn't bank on him to take a spot next year. As I said in my post I want to see one spot left open for someone like Read, Wellwood or Holmstrom to claim it. (If Holmstrom or Wellwood makes the team, the lines would look a bit different.) I put Read in mostly because he has the highest salary of the three.

I know this fantasy and would require some magical work but I thought this roster looked pretty sick.

I realized after posting Andy Greene in the list above that he might want and warrant a decent raise. He played an average of 22:22 including both decent pp and pk time. He's 28 so he probably wants to get a good salary now as he'll be in his 30s soon and probably getting relatively low offers as a veteran if he stays around. He had 37 points last season and 23 this one when New Jersey had a rough season and I think? had to play a stingy game. For comparison Coburn put up 20 and 17 points in the last two seasons respectively, and his highest point total was 38 four seasons ago. It would be cool if we could sign him though, I kind of want Karlis Skrastins.
