Makes no sense for either team.

Edler is, IMO, better than Orpik, and certainly more valuable to the Canucks. While I think Orpik is more valuable to the Penguins than Edler would be.

Raymond also isn't really needed by Pittsburgh -- they need RWers, and I'm almost positive that Tangradi can play RW. It's basically a lateral move, and a risky one with the injury that Raymond suffered.

The Pens won't deal Orpik for anything short of an overpayment. He's the leader, heart, and soul of the defense.

Wow, IMO Edler is way better than Orpik, and I'm an Avs fan. Can't believe a Canuck fan proposed this

Pens and Canucks are just bad trading partners they are both up against the cap and canít really help each other out without one of them becoming less competitive.

Yeah I realize Orpik is a key member of the Pens, and has a lower ceiling than Edler.

The thing is, players with Orpik's makeup are few and far between. Just look at the HUGE difference Hamhuis had on the Canucks this year. On the other hand, Edler, while probably the most talented defenseman on the Canucks, has a skillset that Bieksa, Salo, Ehrhoff and Ballard all have, to varying degrees. I realize you will have to overpay, and Edler would be an overpayment.

The Pens have a long window to contend for the cup where the Canucks' window, in my opinion, syncs up to when Edler and Burrows are due for raises. Edler and Orpik make about the same money now, but Edler will need a contract in the 5+ range in 2 years. I'm confident that Orpik will make the Canucks a better team, even without Edler.

Tangradi adds size and youth to the top 6. Maybe a young defenseman to Vancouver to even it out?

This!

There is NO CHANCE the Canucks trade Edler for Orpik. Edler is a much better player, especially when you factor in how they compare at the same age and points in their careers.

I love Orpik, and he is a significant leader. You won't find many Dmen of that size & physicality who skate better than he does. Unfortunately, he brings ZERO offense and has peaked as a player.

Edler is one of the few players in the league who skates as well as Orpik, and has proven he can be as physical as Brooks. The difference is that Edler also has immense offensive & overall potential, and has Norris candidate upside.

Tangradi for Raymond is a wash and does nothing to change the balance of this deal.

Think it over bud. Edler >> Orpik. And for 2 contending teams, Raymond > Tangradi.

Edler is capable of dominating physically and offensively.. took over the Hawks' series until everybody shat the bed. Broke his two of his fingers and his entire hand was ****ed up somewhere in the playoffs and still played on. Warrior.

Orpik is a great defenseman but Edler is the closest thing to a #1 defenseman that this team has ever had. The addition of Hamhuis elevated the defense from average to great, yes, but you're basing the defense off of the games where he was injured. We were fine with defensive defensemen before he left as Hamhuis-Bieksa was a great shutdown pairing and Salo/Edler were adequate for the other pairs. If Salo is re-signed then we're fine. We could use a physical presence like Orpik on the back end though, but not him specifically as he won't be moved.

For everyone saying Edler>>>>>Orpik, there are a lot more important things for defensemen than point totals.

Orpik plays a grittier, more physical game of hockey. He's intimidating as **** and makes very smart plays in our own zone. Orpik is in the elite tier of defensive defensemen.

Edler is a great hockey player - tough as nails, and obviously, contributes offensively as well. But he doesn't quite bring the same kind of game Orpik does. Edler might have more upside at this point in time, but they are really hard to compare as defensemen.

Orpik = leadership, locker room charisma, bone crushing hits
Edler = solid defensively and offensively, still young

Both great players, but the trade doesn't make sense for either team. And I don't think Shero would jump on this trade given that Edler and Raymond were both just injured (Raymond's injury is pretty serious)

Edler is the only reason people are willing to give Erhoff 5-6. I really hope Toronto signs Erhoff, without Edler he'll be a mess, Phaneuf and Erhoff together would be epic! I'll get a good laugh. Btw, have you ever seen Edler hit? They are every bit as bone crushing as Orpiks

Hm alright. Agree to disagree on this one.

What if a prospect like Depres were added and the two forwards were removed?

The Canucks would fill an organizational void of top tier defensive prospects, get a top defensive dman and the pens get the best player in the deal

Other than "leadership" what facet of the game is Orpik better than Edler at?
