just because Lidstrom didn't fulfill you peoples unrealistic fantasy of him taking a big paycut doesn't mean he's overpaid

he might win the Norris this year for ****s sake....

this forum can get pretty tiresome sometimes

The day I count on you for predictions is the day I become a Blackhawks fan.

The only people who are disappointed with the figure are the ones who penciled him in at like 4 mil on some fantasy roster that includes a top 6 30 goal scorer and two top 4 defensemen who put up 50 points each. Completely unbelievable.

Last year Lids had the highest quality of competition ratings in the NHL (among players who played 70+ games), and he was a Norris finalist. I would have liked to have seen a bit of a discount, too, but it wasn't necessary and he'll earn his contract.

Doubt it, Weber will probably win it.

this is like someone turning against Brodeur.

Does this happen often here? Did people not like Stevie Y (post 92)????

AFAIC it's a discount. The team still has quite a bit of cap space too.

You can, if you are willing to sacrifice.. I could think of about 10 defensemen I would rather have than Lidstrom atm.

He's 41, he's in his last year, lets take a slight discount (I said $5.5 mil, is that really a slap in the face......) to give me the absolute BEST chance of having the perfect send off.

It appears gaining that every last bit of money takes priority over building the best possible team. That's how I see it. You disagree, fine.

All that needs to be said right there. Look at your surroundings folks, right here is the only place in the world where you're going to find wings fans who have any reservations whatsoever about this signing. It really is a special place.

With the cap going up to 64m and Lidstrom signing for 6.2m, does anyone know how much cap space we have?

The voting is done before the playoffs, Weber had a very good season and superb second half, chara was allright in the regular season but a beast in the playoffs.

Like I said in LGW, one million dollars isn't going to make or break this team.

He has no obligation.

With all this talking about discounts, I think most of you are forgetting that even without those said discounts, we're still in a very good situation cap wise. If the rumors about Jagr are true, chances are that his contract wont be closing in on anything like 7M, most likely under half of that, if he wants to get here that is. That means that we still have plenty of money to sign not one but two top 4 defensemen and possibly a bottom pairing defenseman as well.

I mean, don't you guys realize that we have others posting rosters with additions like Jagr, Richards, Ehrhoff and Wisniewski all as additions to the team. Do you realize that the last time we were that stacked was before the lockout?

This is the part that you're wrong on. If he were trying to gain every last bit of money, he'd be making more than 6.2 mil. Either that or you can try and argue that the #1 (or at worst #3) defenseman in the league isn't worth 6.2 mil when guys like Zybnyk Michalek are payed 4 mil a year (which isn't overpayment). Do you not see the disconnect there?

We're not turning on Lidstrom. We love our Lidstrom. We'd be glad to have him back at 8 million. And no, no one sane disliked Yzerman. But Yzerman played his final year for beans. Lidstrom is much higher impact player than Yzerman in his final year but it would have went a long way for Lidstrom to leave another mil on the table. If Stevie could do it, surely Lids could have.

That's all were saying. But glad he's back.

nah Lidstrom and Chara had better seasons than Weber

but aside from that there's also the fact that the Norris is a trophy that is a lot harder to win if you are new to being nominated for it

Weber will be a distant third in voting to Lidstrom and Chara just wait and see

Ah right-o, I got it now! So because there are a handful of guys overpaid in the league, it means Lidstrom cannot get near their salaries as it'd be a disgrace. How about concentrating on our own backyard, and how the extra cap space could've helped us, however small.

We have $16M to spend on strengthening an already deep team, on top of that our best defenceman is coming back. What more do you want when the off-season arrives? $16M equals three really good players, or 5-6 real solid pieces.
