Now that we have a crop of rookies, Smyth is exactly the type of vet the team needs to be adding if we want to crawl out of the basement. He's expensive, and I'd prefer if he was returning to the team as a UFA, but if the Oilers can send the Kings spare parts I'm definitely on board. Unless I'm mistaken his contract will be off the books before the kids are up for new contracts.
For only 1 season at that pricetag, yes. Anything longer would've been debatable.
This is how I feel. Its not a gamble, its giving a player his request to retire where he started, live at home by his family. He loves it here, he realized that when he decided to not accept the oilers offer and he regretted it ever since.
I also think this is a great opportunity to get rid of some redundancies in our roster. We don't need Brule and Cogliano, we only have use for one of them. Send one of them in a trade with Plante + Cogliano for Smyth. Im down with that.

he's only got 1 year left, which makes it highly attractive.
Would it be bad if we acquired him from the Kings, but then flipped him to a contender at the trade deadline? I know it wouldn't do much good for our reputation, but Smyth proved during the playoffs that he can still perform...
But the optics of this would be horrible and it'd probably be best just to let him play out the year here.
Well hypothetical, if Whitney came out and said this to us about going back to Pittsburgh, would you keep him?
It honestly sounds like a polite way of wanting out.
It's tough to say. You can't just give away an asset but I guess it's one of those situations where the two general managers would find away to get a deal done.
For all we know, the Kings value the cap space so much that they would prefer to just give Smyth away.
Would love to see him back. With recent history in mind, I think its GREAT NEWS for the Oiler's organization to hear a player actually want to come here. Smitty has some swagger too. So its awesome news. Even at the cap hit, take him this season, then sign him to a lower end deal to round out his career in Oiler's silks. The guy bleeds copper and blue, I think that would speak miles to our younger players. Would love to have Smyth back, always felt like a different (almost soulless) team since he left, bringing back our identity of a hard nosed, blue collar, hard working team would start with that beaut back in Oilers country.
What is LA's cash flow situation? I know they need to sign doughty, but what is the commitment from ownership? Is this a move they could be forced to make?
That does actually look quite sexy. 1st line is the power vs power line, second like to eat up second pairing defence. Third line to do the same then the 4th has two 10+ goal scorers. I like it.
In previous topics to bring Smyth back, I had been absolutely dead set against it. Now, considering the young players and the team need a solid veteran, I am all for it. It would be the perfect situation for the Oilers, to sign a veteran NHLer who we actually know, can trust, and somebody who genuinely loves the city of Edmonton.
Captain Canada would be a very strong addition to our current situation.

a year ago I would have been hesitant to pick smyth up. This year? different situation for sure.
only a year left at that cap hit and a strong possibility of keeping him around for longer than that in a depth role...AND he ASKED to be traded to edmonton. HE ASKED FOR IT.
as you can probably tell, I'm still digesting this reality.
